Gregory Magee Obituary
MAGEE
Dr. Gregory, on January 12th, 2017, beloved by his wife Robin, his daughters Carrie and Erin, his sons-in-law Anderson and Kelvin, his brother, Kevin, his sisters, Susan and Stacey, his grandchildren Nicholas, Lillian, Kayla, Jordan, Cody and Eli, passed away unexpectedly and far too soon. He was a brilliant physician and his love of medicine and those he cared for are not easily surpassed except for his love of his family, good friends, his patients and those he worked with throughout his distinguished career. After graduating from Fort Lee High School and Princeton University, he attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, completed his medical residency at North Shore University Medical Center and pulmonary fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He started his private practice in 1982 and worked tirelessly to improve the health and happiness of his patients. He was board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care and affiliated with Englewood Hospital, Holy Name Hospital and Palisades Hackensack UMC. He served as a Diplomate for the American Board of Sleep Medicine and was President of Medical Staff and Chairman of the Board of Governors Palisades General Hospital. Most recently, he served as Director for Sleep/Wake Center at Palisades Hackensack UMC. Throughout his professional life he was committed to lifelong learning. Among his many accomplishments, he travelled to Haiti to volunteer his medical services with Nova Hope for Haiti. Greg loved to tend his garden, travel, play golf, walk in the woods and spend quality time with his family and friends. He loved deeply and improved the lives of so many others. Funeral Services will be held at Barrett Funeral Home, 148 Dean Drive, Tenafly, New Jersey on Thursday at 10 AM. Interment Brookside Cemetery, Englewood. A gathering of friends and family will take place at the Magee residence on Thursday from 2-5 PM and Friday from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the Livestrong Foundation and the New Jersey Tree Foundation.

No matter how many years pass, inadvertently, since the departure of one whose presence irradiated so much warmth and goodness as Dr. Magee’s did. it feels as if he is still here with us. I remember him often and so does my family, all of us always in awe of his genius and the way he changed our lives, in some cases, even saved them. Both my husband and I had lethal conditions we were not aware of, in my husband’s case, extremely rare .Various specialists misdiagnosed them , leaving both of us at great peril, until Dr. Magee brilliantly recognized them , out of his endless knowledge and even greater intuition, born of compassion. The years will pass and the sadness of losing him so soon will remain the same, as will be the immense gratitude to Providence for having crossed our paths with his.

I heard about Dr Magee's passing just a couple of days ago, and have thought of little else since. It was as if I had been punched. So wrong, unfair, unexpected. He saved my life, literally, and also my husband's. I once wrote to him that I saw him as an artist. He was a miraculous diagnostician of the most elusive and rare diseases. He just looked at you and he knew. His knowledge was superb, but his prodigious ability to know exactly what was wrong with you came from his own compassionate persona, like an aura- reader.
I moved much, changed cities, countries, and didn't see him for many, many years. But always remembered how lucky I was that he had crossed my path. Will be eternally grateful but deeply sad as well.
My most heartfelt condolences to all his family.

I was so fortunate to be Greg and Robin's neighbor and friend. From the second I met them, probably at the pool in our complex, I felt bathed in love and warmth--between the two of them, unparalleled--and rippling out to everyone around them. Greg was the sweetest, kindest man I may ever have met. He always greeted me with such a dear smile and hello, even if I was half underwater, and then he would light up upon spotting Robin, who lit up in return. With his daughters and beautiful grandchildren, and with Robin's grown children and grandchildren, Greg was a paragon of love and care and pride. I cannot accept that Greg passed away, and my heart breaks for Robin and the legions of people who adored Greg, as a friend, family member, or doctor. Searching desperately for comfort, I know that Greg was so fantastically and fully cherished and loved, and he knew this and glowed with joy. He loved his family, friends and work so much, and Robin more than I've ever seen a man love a woman, and vice versa. They were and will always be my inspiration. Greg, I will see you in my dreams and imagine you, after a wonderful session of doctoring and gardening, strolling toward the pool, looking for the love of your life, and beaming when you see her waiting for you. I will never forget you.

Our family has had the pleasure of knowing the "Dr" as we called him for about 2 years. He was our next door neighbor. You could always find him out back after a long days work, tending to his garden and keeping the grounds looking like heaven on earth. On nice days, he would be outside early reading his paper or cooking on the grill while we could here great music coming from the sound system he had outside. I occasionally would see him getting his mail, and I would yell "what's up Doc"!!! Lol. Throughout those years, we never knew his real name. He was always the Dr!!! The garden Dr, if you ask our family!!! Lol. We will miss seeing you. It's not the same without you. We will miss seeing you at the pool with your beautiful grandchildren and your beautiful daughters. Don't worry about Robin, we're here for her!!! We will continue to protect what you loved so much. I just heard of Dr. Magee's passing today. It was a shock. He had been our doctor for 28 years. When my husband was diagnosed with brain cancer 3 years ago, dr. Magee took the time to talk to me at length about this terrible disease. Not like a doctor, but more like a brother. He was such a compassionate human being. It will be hard to replace him. My wife and I have been patients of Dr. Magee for many years. Our visits felt less like medical appointments and more like spending time with a close family member.
Dr. Magee was a caring, thorough physician who provided us with excellent care and full attention to details about any / all issues affecting our health
Moreover and of most significance was his caring manner and the many wonderful conversations we shared about family and vacations.
We are still very much struggling with his loss with a deep sense of shock and sadness.

Greg and I came to North Jersey at approximately the same time in 1982 at a time when he was associated with Bruce Tapper and Cliff Simon. They had a parting of the ways and it was easy for me to follow him as his journey took him to various offices in Bergen and Hudson County. He was thorough, caring, attentive, and knowledgeable. He never rushed through our visits together and always he had time for any and all questions. I just received the news of his passing this evening. I lost more than my physician; i lost a friend. I've known Dr. Magee since I was 10 yrs old! My mom has worked for him for 30+ years! Not only was he my physician but he was our family! I found out about Greg's passing today. Like so many others, I was shocked and deeply saddened. It's so interesting to see how many had the same experience as me; patients for over 30 years with this kind and brilliant man. Greg was always there for me in any medical or emotional crisis. This morning I went to pay my respects not only to my doctor, my fellow colleague, and good friend. Dr. Gregory Magee you will truly be missed your professionalism, compassion and dedication to each and every person you encountered will always be remembered. As a doctor you treated every patient equally. A Tribute to Dr. Gregory Magee
The first time I met Dr. Magee at his office, he asked about my socks and I told him that our daughter had attended Princeton and ever grateful for our having paid her tuition in full she keeps me in orange and black socks. He then shared his own story of having wanted to attend a college with a great football team and his dad placing a hand on his hand asked him to: Just consider Princeton, son, and he did.
Dr. Magee was a gentleman of distinction: cultured, well read, informed, with an intellectual curiosity that he certainly nourished all his life. He was a delight to converse with, and I looked forward to seeing him as much for his medical knowledge as for his advise and suggestions. He was a
man of keen intelligence and great wisdom which was always dispensed with charm and wit.
His kindness, vast medical expertise, mild manner and sense of humor won him affection and respect. Dr Magee's life centered around his beloved family but his loyalty and dedication was lavished on his family of patients as well.
At my last visit I was reading the book Hamilton and he recommended that I read a new book about Jefferson to balance my concept of the admirable third president. I read the book, of course, knowing that he would ask if it had influenced or clarified my thinking.
He was a well respected man of great professional accomplishments who was dedicated, and well informed, but also generous and caring who talked to his patients without a shadow of condescension. We discussed our physical ills with Dr. Magee, but he treated the whole person, body and mind inseparable. He took the time to know you and in what has become an old fashioned manner he treated the body, mind and spirit of the person.
Dr. Magee was greatly admired as a physician of merit, a man of culture, and a caring humanitarian. His sunny personality and his warm smile put everybody at ease and he enjoyed the trust, admiration and affection of his family of patients.
He gave each of us a model of a life well spent, a life lived with integrity, vision and strong values. We will honor Dr. Magee by doing in our own life what he exemplified so well, that is to seek knowledge, to continue to learn, to keep an open mind, to not take ourselves too seriously, to laugh, and to help one another.
As we hold cherished memories of our dear Dr. Magee in our hearts and minds, let his rich life, his dedication to both the physical, mental, emotional and and intellectual well being of his family of patients, as well as his generosity of spirit, and his humanitarianism be an inspiration for the remainder of ours.

At first when his office called me to cancel my appt. and tell me what happened i sat down and cried. But then for some reason i started to smile. This was because i thought of all the good he has done for myself and all of his patients. I realized what a great asset he was to humanity. Dr. Magee, you were as kind and as cordial as they come. I loved coming to visit your office as a former pharma representative. You made my job easier and always welcomed me with open arms. My thoughts and prayers go out to Dr. Magee's family and friends. We lost a great man!

Condolence to the family and friends of our late Dr. Magee. I used to work as a RN at PGH CCU. When I saw his obituary, I remembered his smile and caring attitude when he comes in the unit. He is very approachable and always in good spirit when he do his rounds. It reflects in in his face on how he love his profession and how passionate he is.
