Hans H., 93, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2016 in Basking Ridge, NJ. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Edith; son Ron and wife Sharon; daughters Marjorie and Diane and partner Pam Van Keuren; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his youngest daughter Cheryl W. Trevithick. Hans was born in Offenbach, Germany in 1923 to Arthur and Hedie Wormser and the oldest of three children. He along with his family fled Nazi persecution in November 1938, immigrating first to England and then to the U.S. in May 1939. Hans graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. degree in Mech. Eng'g with high honors in June 1944. He worked briefly after graduation before being drafted into the U.S. Army. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1945 and served with the occupation forces in Germany during 1945-1946. After returning from active duty, Hans worked for the Association of American Railroads for several years, then spent the rest of his career in the electro-mechanical industry with Universal Winding Co., Scott Paper, Markite Corp. and Litton Industries, retiring in 1988. During his almost forty-year career, he established himself as a leader in the field of variable resistance devices used in material spooling and crane safety. He also remained active in the Army Reserves for 32 years, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1978 and in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for almost 50 years. Hans and Edith became members of Central Unitarian Church in Paramus, NJ in 1960 where they were very active in variety of leadership and volunteer roles for over 55 years. A memorial service for Hans will be held at the Central Unitarian Church, 156 Forest Hill Ave, Paramus, NJ on January 7, 2017 at 2 PM. Contributions in Hans' memory may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee or The University of Delaware Cheryl W. Trevithick Scholarship Fund.
