Howard Marraro Obituary

MARRARO
Dr. Howard William, 89, born May 26, 1925 of Brooklyn, NY, passed away on June 10, 2014, at his home in Charlottesville, Virginia.
He is predeceased by his parents, Howard R. and Helen Haley Marraro, his sister, Helen Abdoo, and niece, Jayma Abdoo.
Dr. Marraro is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 65 years, Carlota Marraro of Charlottesville, and his devoted children, Christopher Howard (Connie) Marraro of Germantown, MD; Francesca (Feruccio) Babarcich of Fort Lee. NJ; Thecia Marrano of Far Hills, NJ; Gabrielle (Park) Ginder of Huntertown, IN; Clelia Marraro of Trenton, NJ, and Cara (Robert) D'Angelo of Long Valley, NJ.
He also leaves behind seventeen adoring grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a niece and nephew, and countless friends and colleagues.
After serving in the United States Coast Guard Pacific Fleet during WII, Dr. Marraro returned to New York and earned his medical degree from the prestigious Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1953. He completed his post graduate practices at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City, Georgetown University, and the Lahey Clinic in Boston before becoming a member of the American College of Physicians in 1959.
Dr. Marraro continued to contribute to his field even after retirement, volunteering as an instructor of medicine at the University of Virginia. Although he always held the principals of his profession in highest regard, Dr. Marraro also acknowledged the healing merits of humor.
Friends and family members seeking his medical advice often received a prescription of a "very dry martini."
He could converse easily on any subject, including Spanish, guitar, golf, college basketball, classical ballet, and the makings of an authentic linguini with clam sauce.
Dr. Marraro's wilt and warmth inspired frequent and wonderful family gatherings, which he always looked forward to. Together with his wife, he was everyone's favorite dinner guest, and host.
He will be gravely missed, and his memory truly cherished, by all those fortunate enough to have known and loved him.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
