James J. Stewart

Ramsey - James J. Stewart, 94, of Ramsey, NJ entered into eternal rest on Monday, September 24, 2018 at his residence at Mill Gardens in Midland Park, NJ. James was born on July 8, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY. He was the eldest child of four born to James and Margaret Stewart. He grew up in Franklin Square, NY where he graduated from Sewanhaka High School, Floral Park, NY where he lettered in field and track. Soon after Jim joined the Navy and served as an electrician's mate on the USS Pintado in the Pacific during World War II. He and his submarine crew were awarded the Presidential citation for heroism for destroying enemy vessels. After returning from the war, James married Jean P. Saulle from Hempstead, NY. He worked 38 years for the New York Telephone Company in New York City, NY. Jim and his wife Jean moved from Long Island to Ramsey, NJ in 1958 where they raised their three children. James retired from the New York Telephone Company in 1982. He was a parishioner of St. Paul R.C. Church and a member of the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus. Jim was an active member of the Ramsey Lion's Club for many years where he served as Deputy District Governor and President. He is predeceased by wife Jean of 65 years, two sisters Katherine Webersinn and Margaret Stewart. He is survived by his son James Stewart and his wife Donna Pirozzi-Stewart of Long Beach Island, NJ and their children James Saverio and Rita-Jean Annette. James also is survived by his daughter Susanne Stewart and her husband Peter DeYoe of Warwick, NY and their sons Charles and Alec and his youngest son William and his wife Christine Ludwig Stewart of Ramsey and their children Scott and his wife Paula Perrone Stewart and Charles Stewart. Jim is also survived by a younger brother Donald Stewart of Fort Lauderdale, FL. James also was the beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews. Family and friends may gather on Friday September 28, 2018 at the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home at 109 Darlington Avenue in Ramsey from 9 AM to 10 AM. A funeral mass will follow at St. Paul R.C. Church, 200 Wyckoff Avenue in Ramsey at 10:30 AM. Entombment will follow at Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Saddle River Valley Lions Club, P.O. Box 333, Saddle River, NJ 07458. Please send tributes, memories and condolences to vanemburghsneider.com.
