Mrs. Jean C. McCarthy, 88, died on January 13, 2018, surrounded by her loving family, at her daughter's home in West Caldwell.

Visiting was in the Prout Funeral Home

(www.proutfuneralhome.com), Verona on Friday, January 19.

A Funeral Mass was offered in Our Lady of the Lake Church, Verona on Saturday, January 20.

Mrs. McCarthy was born and raised in Montclair and in 1954, moved to Verona, where she and her husband of 40 years, James W. McCarthy, Sr., raised their family.

She graduated from the East Orange General Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a Registered Nurse at Mountainside Hospital, Montclair Community Hospital and as a Clinical Director at Essex County Hospital - Overbrook in Cedar Grove.

Mrs. McCarthy was a member of the Verona Senior Citizens, a volunteer at Willing Hearts, was Secretary of the Verona Service League, on the Board of Turning Point and a Girl Scout Leader in Verona. She was also an Essex County Democratic Committee Woman and election poll worker at Verona High School.

She was predeceased by her husband, James W. McCarthy, Sr., her parents Thomas R., and Catherine (nee Campbell) McMurtrie, her sister, Christine Alvine (Gerard) and her brother, John McMurtrie.

Mrs. McCarthy is survived by her loving children, James W. McCarthy, Jr. (Sandy), John D. McCarthy (Alice Martin), Mary Freeman (Darryl) and Winnie Ventura (Robert), cherished grandchildren and loving nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother, Robert McMurtrie (Nancy) and sister-in-law, Diane McMurtrie.
