John Gilfillan Obituary

GILFILLAN John Gilmore III died peacefully on Saturday August 9, 2008, surrounded by his family. He was 71. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1936 to John and Pauline Gilfillan. He spent most of his childhood in Wilmington, Delaware, graduating from Salesianum School in 1952. He then went on to receive a Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Villanova University and a Law Degree from Georgetown University, where he served as the Associate Editor of the Law Journal. He proudly served in the United States Navy, on active duty from 1958 to 1962, and in the Reserves until 1966. He was dedicated to his Ship, the USS Intrepid. While in the Navy he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Trainer, and they were wed April 28th, 1962. Their love was as strong the day he passed as it was the day they were married.After the Navy and law school, he moved to Morris Plains, NJ and soon settled in Morris Township where he lived until his death. He was very active in the Morristown National Little League, coaching for 13 years. Until his recent retirement, where he looked forward to traveling and spending more time at his home in Harvey Cedars NJ, he was a founding member and partner in the law firm of Carella, Byrne, Bain, Gilfillan, Cecchi, Stewart and Olstein. He is a Past Chairman of the Patent, Trademark and Copyright Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association as well as a former member and Chairman of the District 10 Ethics Committee of the New Jersey Supreme Court. He is a member of the American, Federal, New Jersey State and Morris County Bar Associations as well as the American Intellectual Property Association. He looked forward to traveling and spending more time at his home in Harvey Cedars NJ.He was an active volunteer for many causes, most significantly the American Cancer Society where he was Vice-President, General Counsel and former Chairman of the Executive Committee of the New Jersey Division, Inc., and has served as a National Delegate to the Board of Trustees of the American Cancer Society.He was dedicated to the Delbarton School and Villanova University. He is a Past President of the Fathers and Friends of Delbarton and, along with his wife, a member of the School's Hall of Honor. He was also a Trustee of Villanova University and received the Schools Presidential Medal for his years of service and dedication. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Elizabeth (nee Triainer), his five sons and daughters-in-law, John and Siobhan of Morristown, Michael and Christine of Madison, David and Christine of Upper Saddle River, Matthew and Kristen of Chatham, James "Boomer" and Lucia of Morristown, as well as his thirteen adoring grandchildren, Erin, Meghan, Brian, Michael, Katie, Patrick, Connor, David, Natalie, Kevin, Elisabeth, Ann and Shannon.There will be a viewing on Tuesday August 12th from 4 PM to 8 PM at Doyle Funeral Home, 106 Maple Avenue, Morristown NJ. The funeral Mass will be held Wednesday August 13th at 11 AM at Christ the King, Blue Mill Road, New Vernon, NJ. Internment will be at Holy Rood Cemetary, Morristown, NJ.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gilfillan Scholarship Fund at Delbarton School, a fund established by his children to benefit young men who wish to attend the school.
