John Jerome, aka Jack, 90, died peacefully on April 28 at the RWJ Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ following a brief illness.
He leaves his wife, Jeanne, to whom he was married for 59 wonderful years, his son, John (wife Mary Jo), his daughter Mary (husband Jeff Noonan), and three grandchildren, Johnny, Katie and Tara. He also has three surviving sisters (Josephine Brady, Joan Amato and Eileen Colonna) and numerous nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Mauch Chunk, Pa., the son of John and Catherine (Conahan) McDermott, Jack worked a number of jobs in the coal mines and on the railroad, while he was in high school. He and his family of eight sisters and two brothers moved to the Bronx in the 1950s, which is where he met Jeanne. He graduated from Iona College and became a chemical engineer at Burroughs Corporation, where he worked for over 50 years in a variety of roles to include environmental protection. He and Jeanne moved to Penfield, NY in 1978, and then to Hillsborough, NJ in 2008 after he retired, to be closer to their families. Jack was an avid sports fan and golfer, and for much of his adult life, he was a very well respected college, high school and CYO basketball referee, who also umpired baseball and refereed football. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday May 1st at 12:30pm in Mary Mother of God Church, 157 S. Triangle Rd., Hillsborough, NJ 08844. Cremation will be private. Visiting will be Friday from 10am-12noon at the Hillsborough Funeral Home, 796 US Hwy 206, Hillsborough, NJ 08844. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church in Jack's name.
