THIRUVATHUKAL
Dr. John V., PhD., 77, of Clifton passed away peacefully on September 17, 2015.
Born and raised in Cherthala, Kerala, India, Dr. Thiruvathukal came to the United States as a teen to enroll in St. Louis University, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree and then went on to earn his Master's Degree from Michigan State University and his PhD from Oregon State University. He had lived in Clifton for over forty years and prior to retiring this summer, had been employed as a Professor of Geology and Oceanography at Montclair State University for forty-five years and co-authored a textbook on Oceanography. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Philip the Apostle R.C. Church in Clifton and was a member of the American Geophysical Union.
Dr. Thiruvathukal was pre-deceased by his two brothers, Kris and Joseph Thiruvathukal, and by a sister, Annamma (Sr. Mary Joseph).
He is survived by his beloved wife, Teresa (Mary)(nee Kailath), of Clifton; his son, George Thiruvathukal and his wife, Rachna Narula, of Los Angeles, CA; his daughter, Christina Stevenson and her husband, Clayton, of Avon, CT; two sisters: Thrasiakutty Mathew of Cherthala, India and Mary Patel of Melbourne Beach, FL; and three granddaughters: Sabrina, Elizabeth and Katherine.
Funeral services will be Monday 9:15 AM from the Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton and 10:00 at St. Philip the Apostle R.C. Church, 797 Valley Road, Clifton. Interment to follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Upper Montclair. Visiting Sunday from 2-6 PM.
