Kevin Lawler Obituary

LAWLER
Kevin Andrew entered into eternal life on November 18, 2016, at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ with family by his side. Kevin had battled Multiple Sclerosis for forty years and for almost seventeen years had lived at the Allendale Nursing Home in Allendale, NJ. Kevin was born in Nyack, NY on May 22, 1941. He was the fifth of seven children of John and Mary (nee- Keller) Lawler. He went to Xavier Military Academy in Manhattan. He was a proud member of the class of 1963 of Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA. He was an avid athlete until MS confined him to a wheelchair. He is survived by his loving wife, Anne Bach Lawler and their three children, Nancy and her husband Daniel Rochelle, Christin Lawler, Beth Lawler and her husband Andrew Pincus. He was a grandfather of fifteen grandchildren. He is survived by his six siblings, their spouses and twenty-eight nieces and nephews. Kevin developed a number lovers game that was simple yet challenging called "Arithmecards" and "Appithmetic". Kevin enjoyed words and language almost as much as he enjoyed numbers. Scrabble was a lifelong favorite, and he rarely found an opponent to beat him. He was the author of several published poems. Kevin cooked with a chronic debilitating illness in surprisingly creative ways. Everyone who met Kevin was touched by his spirit. Kevin taught all who knew him that one could live with dignity, grace, and wit in spite of physical incapacity. He was an unassuming inspiration to more people than he realized. His optimism was contagious and eternal. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home, 109 Darlington Ave, Ramsey, NJ. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at 10 AM at Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River, NJ. (everyone please meet at church) Interment will follow at St. Luke's Cemetery in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Kevin to Xavier High School, 30 West 16th Street, New York, NY 10011 or College of the Holy Cross, One College Street, Worcester, MA 01610. Kevin was the roommate of my best friend John Zawacki on 4th floor Fenwick my freshman year (fall 1959) at Holy Cross. I grew to Love him during my four years at Holy Cross because of His Love of Life and God. In all of His activities He reflected the love of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Kevin pray for us. Dear Ann and Family, My earliest memory of Kevin was on Fenwick 4th floor freshman year. Kevin was two rooms away with John Zawacki. I made a quick and lasting friend and a man to admire. Paula and I send our heart felt prayers and love in your time of need.

Dear Ann & Family, Even though Kevin and I were not close friends at the Cross I admired him for his enthusiasm for life and his many achievements on the Hill. In these later years he has been an inspiration to me. His example of courage and goodness has been a major factor in helping me deal with problems and difficulties in my own life and not giving into the temptation at times of feeling sorry for myself. I will continue to be inspired by him and will keep you all in prayer. Fr. Larry O'Keefe, '63

I pass along my condolences to Ann whom I met years ago in Allendale. Kevin was a brave soul putting up with his ailment for so many years, as well as my terrible record of my not having called him as much as I should have. His record in track at HC will always be remembered as well as his tireless enthusiasm he exhibited while on campus.
All the best to Ann as she continues to help others for many years to come. Regards,

Fr. Frank Kelley, '63

Friend of God. friend of mankind, a blessing to one and all.

Our fondest memory of Anne and Kevin is the evening spent with both our families at your home watching with baited breath as Neil Armstrong left the space capsule and stepped on the moon.We still get teary eyed whenever we recall this shared moment . Now Kevin can step out on any planet he chooses...go Kevin.

We will be at Mass. Peace to all your family.

Much love, Gerry and Dick Bracken
