Marilyn Shadek Obituary

SHADEK
Marilyn Leers passed away peacefully on February 2, 2016 surrounded by her husband Warren and their four children at Chilton Hospital. Marilyn was born to Marian and Frank Leers on January 11, 1935 in Englewood Hospital. She spent her early years in Teaneck. Marilyn graduated from the Dwight School for Girls in Englewood and then received her undergraduate BA degree from Goucher College in Baltimore, MD. She embarked upon a brief teaching career in the Teaneck school district before meeting her husband on a blind date in 1958. Marilyn and Warren were married on December 20, 1958, and were lifelong companions for 57 years. They raised their four children in Oradell before retiring to Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains. Marilyn was a devoted mother and grandmother and encouraged all of her children and grandchildrenin their academic and extracurricular activities.
Marilyn was an avid bridge player who also enjoyed bowling, swimming, and traveling. She and Warren visited almost every US state and over 160 countries on many long international cruises. She enjoyed reading, word puzzles, sudoku, and bingo. She loved music and sang with several church choirs, was a member of the Oradell Book and Needle Club, and was also involved in Ridgewood Gilbert and Sullivan performances. Marilyn served as an elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood, was a trustee of the Oradell Swim Club, and was a member of the Paramus Park Mall Walkers. Her favorite television programs were Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Judge Judy, Dr. Phil, and Lawrence Welk. She also enjoyed watching professional sports, and it was difficult to separate Marilyn from her beloved New York Yankees.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, WARREN, and their four children: daughter PATRICIA PLATTEN, husband Robert, and daughter Lynley; son PETER, wife Lisa, and children Christopher and Kathryn; daughter KAREN CARROLL, husband John, and children Graeme, Braeden, and Kristyn; and son KENNETH, wife Kim, and children Daniel, Justin, and Gabriella. She was predeceased by her only sibling, William Craig Leers, and his wife Linda.
Funeral services were private. Arrangements were made by the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home in Pompton Plains. Marilyn was interred at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.

I have been thinking of both Marilyn and Warren for quite some time now. I became a friend of theirs during the trip to Australia and New Zealand in 1987. Please convey my heartfelt sympathy to Warren. Thank-you.

Marilyn was a wonderful neighbor in Oradell. She always had a warm smile, a big heart , and a caring personality. Mike and I have such happy memories of the Shadek family.
May she rest in peace

It's with great sadness I learned of Marilyn's passing. She was always a presence at softball and volleyball games and I always got the sense that she delighted in seeing others reach their goals. Hers was a generous spirit. My condolences to the entire Shadek family, in particular my friend of nearly 40 years, Karen.
