Mark Haines Obituary

NEW YORK — Mark Haines, co-anchor of CNBC's morning "Squawk on the Street" show and one of the business news network's most recognized faces, died unexpectedly on Tuesday evening, the network said. He was 65.

The network said he died in his home. It did not specify the cause of death.

Mr. Haines worked at CNBC for 22 years. He was the founding anchor of the "Squawk Box" morning show. In 2005, he started co-anchoring "Squawk in the Morning," a 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. show, with Erin Burnett, while "Squawk Box" was pushed to an earlier slot. Burnett recently left CNBC to host a general news show on CNN.

"He was a very dear friend, and a ferocious and fearless questioner," Burnett told CNBC on Wednesday.

CNBC President Mark Hoffman said Mr. Haines was "always the unflappable pro."

Traders on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange observed a spontaneous moment of silence when they learned of Mr. Haines' death, NYSE spokesman Richard Adamonis said.

"Mark was an outstanding professional and pioneer in business journalism, and we are proud that his legacy includes years of excellence in reporting from the NYSE," the exchange said in a statement.

"He was an authentic voice in business media," said Eric Jackson, who runs the hedge fund Ironfire Capital. "He resonated with so many people because he would speak out, and with opinion. Too often the media lets the corporate PR army and highly trained CEOs get their points across without question. He wouldn't let that happen."

Mr. Haines is also remembered for calling a bottom to the stock market decline on March 10, 2009, his first call of the recession. The Dow Jones industrial average never closed below its level of March 9.

Barry Ritholtz, head of the research firm Fusion IQ and frequent guest on CNBC, said Mr. Haines was "a no-nonsense straight shooter. He knew what questions to ask and how to ask them."

Ritholtz said that the biggest complaint about CNBC in the 1990s was that its anchors cheered on the stock-market bubble. He said the exception was Mr. Haines, who was always skeptical.

"He was trained as an attorney," Ritholtz said. "He brought that keen lawyer's eye to everything he did. It wasn't something often seen in the financial media."

Mr. Haines had a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania and was a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, CNBC said.

Before joining CNBC, Mr. Haines worked as a news anchor at TV stations in Philadelphia, New York and Providence, R.I.

Mr. Haines is survived by his wife, Cindy, his son, Matt, and daughter, Meredith.

CNBC, which is owned by Comcast Corp., said funeral arrangements have yet to be made.

Seven years since the wonderful Mark Haines passed. I watched him on CNBC before he became the founding anchor of Squawk Box. Seven years later and he is still missed. A genuinely honest, intelligent, caring and wonderful person. Mark, thank you for everything and for caring about your viewers. To his family, please know
that Mark was a special person. People still think about him, love him and miss him dearly.

Can't believe you're gone Mark but hope God took you up on wings of love. I lost a dear, delightful friend - but I never really met him in person. Didn't need to - what I saw and heard from him on TV is I suspect very close to who he was. Hope he realized how much he meant to so many of us who knew him only from inside those cameras. Funny guy with a big brain who cared about others, what more could you ask for in a man! My kinda guy. I cry every time I think of him not being able to see his children continue on in their young lives and hope they realize that really they were lucky to have him as long as they did because he was one of a kind. Hopefully he infused some of his outlook on life in them as it will serve them well in the days ahead. My heartfelt love and condolences go out to Mark's wife and entire family. Thank you for sharing him with us for the past 22 years.

I enjoyed Mark Haines for years on CNBC. He was as described, "a straight shooter" and a man who engendered confidence and humor. I especially enjoyed the show when he and Erin worked together (until recently). I will miss his input very very much. My condolences to his wife and children.

First I would like to say one thing about Mark Haines that I dont believe has been said. Eveyone knows how Mark famously called the stock market bottom in 2009. I truly believe it was more than that. Mark had so much respect from the viewers and participants that I believe his call actually influenced the market and contributed to the market rebound with that call. I want to express my sincere condolances to the Haines family. For the past dozen years I have watched and listened to Mark Haines. He was the gold standard for all the media to me. He was like a father figure even though we had never met. I will miss him very much. May he rest in peace.

I am a small investor and a former employee of GE. I've watched Mark Haines on CNBC from the beginning. He had a great quality of explaining technical issues in the markets that meant a lot to people like me. He reminded me of our friend Roy Neal, the NBC Science correspondent who explained technical details of the manned space program. Mark Haines also had an ability to ask the right questions and get to the truth, in ways that were succinct and meaningful. He will not be forgotten. - Tom Blackwell, Dallas, Texas

So sorry to hear this news. When I lived in the NYC metro area, I enjoyed Mark's daily banter during his business spot with the pre-Today show (5-7am) news anchors (Maurice and Jane). He was so funny, and right-on. His passing is a loss to all. Prayers to his friends and family.

I had the honor of meeting mark when I was President of The Emanuel Cancer Foundation in New Jersey. He attended an event of ours at which time he opened his heart and his check book to help our organization.
I remember turning on squawkbox on a morning when he had commited to a speaking engagement to a business group I led only to find he was out sick that day! Quite a dissapointment except for the fact that he drove over an hour with a terrible head cold to speak to my group! I need not say any more. He was a good and generous man who will be sorely missed by friends and family. My condolences to his family and may he rest in peace.

"...love your show too." One of Mark's classic, tongue-in-cheek retorts to Donald Trump just days before his untimely passing. A man who could see through pretense and slice through it with with wit and humor. Thanks for your down to earth style pal---it was refreshing.

Mark and I had breakfast together for many years. He was such a refreshing change from all the other anchors that it was a joy to watch him. He was definitely one of a kind. He could be tough as a tiger when interviewing some "stuck on himself" CEO or analyst and was a teddy bear when he said good bye to Erin. I don't know how I will get though the days without him and his sharp wit. My sincere condolences to his family. Rest In Peace, Mark!!!

He and Erin were a team and the two of them added up to a platoon of financial reporters. But more than that, his humanity and love of the simple things in life like tomatoes made him special. An awful loss to CNBC. As an investor for forty years I can say that Mark had a great knowledge of how the average investor viewed the Market. Losing Erin Burnett and Mark is quite a blow to thoughtful investors. Mark was like our father and Erin was our girl next door. Thank you to MSNBC for devoting the better part of Wednesday to Mark's passing. It showed allot of class and perspective.

It has taken days to even be able to put into words what the loss of Mark Haines means to me and thousands of other viewers like me. I have seen tribute after tribute to him which shows how appreciated he was. The most important tribute I can give him is to say he was one of a kind. He told it like it was and would not let any of those big shots lie or dodge his questions. He was a tiger of a man. However, I also believe he was a teddy bear at heart after seeing his good bye to Erin. My heart goes out to his family. RIP Mark.
