STEPICH
Miriann Vuckovich, of Teaneck, New Jersey, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at the age of 84 after a short illness.
Born in Johnstown PA, to the late Serbian immigrants Dragich and Jelena Vuckovich, Miriann was preceeded in death by her siblings Darinka Vuckovich, Mary Hutchison, Carolyn Freed, Nicholas Vuckovich, Helen Karlo, and Protinica Constance Savich. Miriann earned her BA at the University of Pittsburgh, her MA in Education at Teachers' College Columbia University, and her Masters in Social Work at Columbia University.
In her professional life, Miriann worked as a teacher in Pennsylvania, and a Director of Activities at International House in New York City. Later, she became a social worker for the New York Board of Education where she was a case worker until her retirement in 1992. She continued to work on special cases in the area of social work for several years.
Miriann was a dedicated member of the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava in New York, and was very active in spiritual and church affairs, as well as fundraising for her church. She was an avid reader, always interested in political issues and she loved to travel and to enjoy the performing arts, especially the Metropolitan Opera.
She is survived by her loving husband of over 50 years, Boris J. Stepich; her son Timothy Stepich and his wife Cyndi, and her three grandchildren, Charles, David and Emily-Ann of Los Angeles CA. She also leaves behind numerous loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin on Thrusday, Septermber 1 at 7 PM at Volk-Leber Funeral Home, 789 Teaneck Rd., Teaneck, NJ, with a pomen at 8 PM. Her funeral will take place at 10 AM on Friday, September 2, at St. Sava Cathedral, 20 W. 26th St. New York City, NY, with interment at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Queens, Long Island.
Memorial Gifts may be made to St. Sava Cathedral, or St. Vladimir's Seminary, Crestwood, NY.
