Murray Meltzer Obituary

MELTZER
Murray A., MD, 80, of Goshen (Woodridge Lake), CT and Tenafly, NJ. An adored and admired surgeon who has left the world a better place. He is survived by his daughters Lori, Deanne and Jennifer; his sons-in-law Peter and Vineet, his grandchildren Trevor, Allison, Maya and Jake, his eldest brother Marty, and many much-loved cousins, nieces and nephews. He was a wonderful husband to his late wife of 47 years, Adrienne. He was a Professor of Ophthalmology and the Director of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He practiced medicine and taught younger physicians until the day he entered the hospital. He loved it so. Born in Brooklyn, NY, the youngest of three boys of the late Jacob and Rose Meltzer, and brother of the late Irwin, Murray graduated from New Utrecht High School, Cornell University, SUNY Downstate Medical College and went on to further training in New York and London. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at 12 noon at Temple Sinai in Tenafly. Notes of condolence may be sent to [email protected]. As Murray and Adrian's neighbor in Tenafly for many years, my memory of both of them remains very clear- helpful, kind, warm and loving. I ran into Muarry several years ago at a concert in Connecticut and it was a delightful and coincidental meeting. Lori and Jenn- please contact me if you would. It would be great to be back in touch. Adam and both of my parents join me in wishing you the best. Eric

I'm really sad to hear this. I was a patient of Dr. Meltzer and I was lucky to find him. As all have said, kind, gentle, knowledgeable and thorough. I'd like to share a story that makes me smile: I came to him after a harmless looking growth on my eyelid turned out to be a rare cancer. He performed my full excision (and by the way removed the stitches so gently with tweezers as to not hurt me). When I came in for my surgical follow up, he said "first, the good news" (just like you would say if there was both good and bad) so I tensed up and he said there were clear margins. Then he didn't say anything, so I said "what's the bad news?" He said in his kind sweet voice "oh, there is no bad news, I was just saying first the good news and then on with our appointment! I gave a huge sigh of relief and then my mom and I had a good laugh. I will miss him.

I was so very saddened to hear about Dr. Meltzer's death. He was my ophthalmologist for nearly 35 years and I always felt safe in his care because he was such a fine diagnostician. And as important to me was his being such a sensitive and kind man. Our visits always ended with a shared and heart-felt hug. My wish is that each day brings comfort to his family and friends in that a happy memory of him is remembered and stored in their hearts.
Sincerely, Hope Chasin

Murray was a friend on and off the tennis court at Woodridge Lake for many years but still too short a time. A powerfully gentle man whose memory brings a smile to my face.

I wish to extend my sincere condolences to Dr. Meltzer's family. As this initial period of mourning comes to a close, I hope that friends or even one of Murray and Adrian's daughters will contact me to discuss a further written tribute for purposes as described below. (I may be reached at [email protected]).
Dr. Murray Meltzer z"l was one of my most beloved teachers during my fellowship year in New York City 1983-84 and a long-time colleague in our professional society the ASOPRS. My primary mentor, Dr. Albert Hornblass z"l was president of the Society in 1993 and I had the privilege of later serving as president in 2004. I am now seeking more biographical information from Murray's family and friends to write a short biography to include in a Society-sponsored book scheduled to be published in 2019. May Murray's memory be a blessing.

So sorry to hear about Murray's passing last night from Danny. We consulted with him when Gary was diagnosed with RP. He gave us advice as to where he should be seen.
Though I haven't seen you all in MANY YEARS, it still was sad to hear this news. Sending you all my sincerest sympathy at this tough time.

I am so pleased I had a chance to know Dr. Meltzer--both as the father of my dear friend Lori, and as my doctor for about 30 years. What a wonderful and kind person he was in all aspects of his life.

Not only a great physician, but a humanitarian as well. They don't make them like that any more. Will be greatly missed.

I knew Murray at PS 103 in Boro Park.

I remember him as tall, thin, bright, and a friend of David Joroff.

An occasion I remember is that he walked me home from a halloween party in David's house on 52 St.
I had won the the bob for apples" contest, and my prize was that Murray would walk me home (to 51 Street). This was a big deal at
12 years old.

It is sad to learn of his death. It was a shock.

From the obituary, I can see that he was a man of extraordinary accomplishments and service. You sorrow will surely be lessened by wonderful memories.

Sincerely,

Sivia Karansky Kaye

Murray was a humble man of great accomplishment - his even temperament, sense of empathy, work ethic and wide ranging aptitude made him a rare and wonderful human being. If there were more like him in the world, it would surely be a better place.

Is this the Murray Meltzer from Boro Park, Brooklyn?
I went to PS 103 with him-- and was a good friend in those early halcyon days.
