Paul Ferber Obituary

FERBER Paul L., died peacefully Thursday March 17th in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. His son, Paul, and daughter-in-law, Victoria, were at his side in his final moments. Born on January 18, 1916 in Hackensack, New Jersey Paul was the son of Mary Meyer Ferber and Fredrick V Ferber. He graduated from Hackensack High School at age 16, The Choate School in 1934, and Yale University in 1938. Paul was an excellent tennis player and was on the varsity tennis team at each school. Paul joined the Navy in 1940 and enrolled in the Yale unit recruited for naval aviation training. Some of his training took place at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station where he met and married Amy Shields Kurtz. During WWII he served in the Pacific where he flew a Scout Plane from the U.S.S Pennsylvania. Paul earned numerous metals for bravery to include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and Gold Star. After the war Paul and his family moved to Englewood, New Jersey where he joined his brother in the family construction business, The Ferber Company. His keen business sense enabled the company to expand from New Jersey to areas throughout the Eastern United States. As the company grew it evolved into a Real Estate Development Company. Paul's guidance in business and love of family contributed to the fourth generation Ferber Company which is run by his son, Paul, and grandson, Shields. Paul was an avid fly fisherman and was a member of The Fly Fishers Club of Brooklyn. He also enjoyed golf and was a former member of the Arcola Country Club in New Jersey, The Ponte Vedra Inn and Club in Florida, and the Sawgrass Country Club in Florida. Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Amy, of 68 years and a son, Bayard. He is survived by a son, Paul S. (Victoria), a grandson, Shields (Alison), a great grandson, Stuart, a nephew, Stephen Ferber, a niece, Cornelia Ferber Potter, two first cousins, and numerous other cousins. A memorial will be held at St. Johns Cathedral in Jacksonville, Florida at 3 PM on April 8th. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to the United Cerebral Palsy of Florida, 1830 Buford Court, Tallahassee, FL 32308. Arrangements are under the direction of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, FL.

Dear Paul and Victoria,
It is so sad to have to say goodbye to a great father. I hope you are at peace knowing he is now reunited with his sweet Amy. They are together as angels watching over you and your family. I will always remember your father and his bowties! With sympathy and peace, Susan Spalding

It was a surprise to read of Paul's death as we have not been in contact since the day WWII ended. I relieved Paul as Senior Aviator in the battleship USS Pennsylvania (BB38) in about October, 1944. We met again at NAS Pensacola, FL on V-J Day in 1945. I remained in the service for 32 years but our paths never crossed after the war. Paul was good at everything he did, and he did everything. A great shipmate!
