Philip Engel Obituary

RIDGEWOOD - Philip J. Engel, 89, died on June 20.

Born in Morristown, he grew up in Mendham and graduated from Morristown High School in 1944. Subsequently, he joined the Army and served in the Army of Occupation in Japan and later during the Korean War, both times in the Counter Intelligence Corps. Phil was a graduate of Princeton University, where he was a member of the Court Club and Glee Club. Phil had a long and successful banking career in New York, London, Sydney and Paris, retiring in New York as a senior vice president of HSBC. Past president of the Ridgewood Hobbyists and former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Phil enjoyed travel, music, tennis and, above all, his family.

He was the husband of Doris Zimmerman ("Zim") Engel; father of Elizabeth, John and his wife Susan, Katherine and Christine Zerkle and her husband Michael; grandfather of Kristin (Jeremy Mull), Matthew (Shanon), Andrew (Kelly) and Emily Engel, and Anna, Caroline and Tommy Zerkle; great-grandfather of Caroline and Milo Mull and Harrison and Hazel Engel; brother-in-law of Diane Zimmerman. He was predeceased by his sister Muriel Engel Rudershausen.

A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church in Ridgewood at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 24. Visitation will be held at the Feeney Funeral Home in Ridgewood from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 23.

Doris, so sorry to hear the news that Philip had passed on. I remember meeting you at Sunday mass at OLMC Ridgewood, NJ a number of years ago because we all sat in the section in front of St. Jude. Noticed immediately there was something special about the two of you. Doris, Will lift you up in prayer as you grieve the passing on of Philip. May he rest in peace.
