Robert Marron
Mahwah - It is with deep and profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert J. Marron, our beloved and revered uncle and friend to all whose lives he shared.
Robert Joseph Marron, age 95, passed away peacefully on July, 7, 2020 natural causes. He was born on Feb 9, 1925 in Paterson, N.J. to Joseph and Caroline Marron, Jr.
He was raised in Glen Rock attending Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Ridgewood and later Central Junior High in Glen Rock and after moving to Ridgewood in 1940 graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1942. While in the midst of World War 2, he attended Holy Cross College and graduated in 1945. During this time he also completed studies within the ROTC program and was commissioned as a naval officer.
Upon commissioning, he was assigned to the U.S.S. Shaula AK 118, in February, 1945 and saw service at Leyte Gulf, Samar, Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan and Shanghai, China. As a line officer he performed Officer of the Day duties along with commanding 35 men of the 2nd Division, as well as a 5" 38 man gun crew. Uncle Bob would always suggest that while he had duty walking the streets of Nagasaki and Hiroshima less than two months after the dropping of the atomic bombs, not understanding the effects of radiation poisoning at that time, he felt the most danger he faced was from typhoons, surviving two of the worst typhoons on record. He was discharged from the Naval Inactive Reserves in 1958.
Upon his return to the United States he joined Coastal Oil Company as one of the primary suppliers of heating oil on the eastern seaboard and largest supplier in New Jersey. He rose through leadership roles rapidly becoming Vice President of Operations in 1955 and was elected Executive Vice President and President of both Home Fuel Oil and Onco Oil in the mid-1960s. He was a member of the American Petroleum Institute, New York Oil Traders ass. and many other industry organizations. After thirty years of service, he retired in 1976.
To his family and friends he was known as an avid hunter, golfer and fisherman winning many awards in skeet shooting and fishing. He was a former member of the Ridgewood Country Club, the Tuxedo Club at Tuxedo Park, N.Y. and the Black Meadow Gun Club. He was also a proud member of the President's Council at Holy Cross College for over 20 years.
He was the loving and devoted brother of Virginia M. Cooper of Watchung, NJ. and Uncle to Leslie F. Cooper of Waretown, NJ, Sally Chardos of Rockhill, SC, Karen McAuley of Rockhill, SC and Diane Kindall of Bethlehem, PA.
In the end, while his accomplishes were many and storied, his greatest attributes were that of love of God, country and family. He had many friends and would be described by all as a true gentleman, great sportsmen, unconditionally loving brother and uncle, compassionate leader and faithful friend who could put a spin on a ping-pong ball like no other. His generosity was legendary and whenever his dozens of nephews and nieces would ever come to the Northeast, they would always want to stop to see "Uncle Bob". In the end, if God was to disguise his attributes in a mere mortal, we suspect he would look like Uncle Bob; few men were ever as noble as he.
If mourning is our last act of love for those who go before us, we will mourn for a long time. For online condolences, visit
