Ronald Hilbert Obituary

Ronald Allen Hilbert

Ronald Allen Hilbert, age 62, of Seattle, Washington, died peacefully on January 24, 2006, at Harborview Hospital. The son of Vi and Don Hilbert, he was born on March 16, 1943, in Tulalip, Washington.
He was preceded in death by brother, Denny; birth father, Bob Coy; and father, Henry Don Hilbert.
He is survived by his mother, Vi Taqseblu Hilbert; fiance, Katherine Onieta; sister, Lois Schluter, and her husband, Walter; nephew, Jay Samson, and his wife, Bedelia; niece, Jill LaPointe, and her husband, John; seven grand-nephews and grand-nieces; many cousins; and countless friends.
Ron recently retired from his job as a teacher at Small Faces Child Development. He came from a long line of historians that include Ruth Coy Shelton, Harriett Shelton, and his grandparents, Louise and Charlie Anderson. His life's work, as a man coming from a historical background, was to use his gift as an artist to honor his culture through his artwork.
A memorial will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, January 29, at the Upper Skagit Tribal Gym, east of Sedro-Woolley, on Highway 20. Services will be held there at 10 a.m. the following morning. Funeral arrangements made by Hawthorne Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, 360-424-1154.

On the day of your funeral dear friend, I took this journey alone, where over the last three years we went together many times to visit your Mom. We’d always stop in Marysville to have breakfast and pick up your favorite pie and some to take as a gift. Today I pick up some Bumbleberry pies to take to your funeral for the meal and the burning and ride there and home alone…remembering…r>
A brother, a friend, a mentor, and an artist I admired. Thank you for teaching me the Coast Salish ways that you knew, for helping me find lost links to my own culturally challenged past.

Now I will hear your voice in the falling rain, feel your presence in the restless wind and recognize your spirit in the animals and plants of the region. Now that the owl has called your name, I’ll wait up to see you back in another form and feel grateful for the time we spent together.

Now you are dancing again my friend, with nothing to hold you back. I had so hoped to follow your lead at smokehouse this year. I will see you on the other side when the owl calls my name. Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me courage and strength to sing my song when it comes to me and for the example you set by telling stories, and fearlessly expressing what you thought was important through your art. Our long conversations during our trips back and forth to Bow will always be treasured memories.

To the family: I grieve your loss along with you and pray that his passing was like melting into the arms of the heavenly saints. May his good qualities live on in all of us and may we all take care to see that he is never forgotten.
