Ruth Leverett Obituary

Ruth Leverett

Hackensack - Ruth Leverett of Hackensack, age 90 passed away in peace at home with loved ones on July 4th, 2021. She was born to the late William and Florence (Heard) Leverett and predeceased by her two older brothers, William Jr. and James Herbert (Jean), first African American Councilman of Hackensack, NJ, and Godmother Nellie K Parker.

Ruth was a special light and help to her family. Always full of the desire to pitch-in in any area requiring assistance. She was a strong source of wisdom and knowledge ever abounding in good works. She lovingly and faithfully cared for both her mother and father driving down from upstate NY every weekend. She looked after her Aunt Camille and Uncle Charlie, mowing the lawn, climbing a ladder, painting, hammering or looking for the latest invention to make life easier for her family.

Ruth graduated from Hackensack High School, and Colby College with a degree in Chemistry. She worked in research for many years with the State of NY in Albany where she retired. She fulfilled a dream and built a home in Malta, NY. After receiving too much anesthesia during surgery Ruth's memory was affected and she moved to Farrell, PA where she lived with Anna Lorraine Ampy who was like a daughter for many years before returning to Hackensack to live with cousins.

She was a member of Varick Memorial AME Zion in Hackensack where her family served for almost half a century.

She loved the outdoors frequently participating in cross country skiing, golf, horseback riding, Tai Chi, to name a few. She was the historian and link that kept her family connected. Her hobby was growing orchids and gardening. She was constantly on the move even in her latter years up until the Lord called her home. She never gave up. She was puppy Barron best friend, who always loved her up, checked on her and stayed close by.
