Stewart Dumas Obituary

DUMAS
Stewart N., formerly of Whiting and Elmwood Park, passed away at Barn Hill Care Center in Newton on March 22, 2012 following a prior hospital stay. He was 83.
Born in Plainville CT on October 2, 1928 to D. Stuart and Alice Cabana Dumas, Stewart attended schools in Cincinnati OH and Paterson NJ. Serving in the U.S. Army 1946-48, he was a Military Police guard at Sugamo Prison in occupied Japan while Prime Minister Hideki Tojo was held awaiting trial for war crimes.
Stewart worked 32 years as a Quality Inspector for Curtiss-Wright Corporation in Wood-Ridge, where he met wife Ethel Hlywa of East Paterson. They married in 1950, living briefly in Clifton before building a home in East Paterson where they lived for 35 years. After retiring in 1984, Stewart worked several years as a Fair Lawn public school bus driver.
He and Ethel moved to Whiting NJ in 1993. They spent countless summer days in the company of friends at Island Beach State Park. They moved to Belvidere in December.
A lifelong baseball fan, Stewart escorted his wife to a Lakewood Blue Claws game last June to celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary.
Stewart will be dearly missed by his loving and devoted wife, Ethel; daughter, Maryann Vermeulen and husband Brom of Glen Gardner; sons Robert and wife Marilyn of Grand Island FL, Gary and wife Kathy of Clifton. He is also survived by brothers Roger of Sebastopol CA, Dan and wife Ruth of Auburn, WA; granddaughter Heather of Atlanta GA; grandson Derek of Amarillo, TX; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many well-loved relatives. He is predeceased by brother Raymond of Springfield MA.
A private memorial service was held at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown PA.
