Thomas F. Meli

MELI, Thomas F. was born on December 19, 1928 in a house on South Main Street in Hackensack. He grew up in the first ward in Hackensack on South Main Street and then the family moved to Hudson Street where he attended Broadway Elementary School, the family attended Saint Francis Church. Tom Meli was Known by fellow students as the "Milkman" because he delivered milk with his father before school everyday in the family business. Thomas F. Meli scored the winning touchdown against rival Teaneck High School in the Thanksgiving Day game in his senior year of 1945-1946 for Hackensack High School. Thomas F. Meli worked at various jobs after high school until he was drafted into the Army on January 26, 1951 during the Korean Conflict and served in Germany at Check Point Charlie. He married the love of his life Elaine Kalbhen of Bogota on April 21, 1951 until she passed away 55 years later on September 29, 2006. Tom Meli was discharged as a Corporal U.S. Military Police after serving in Germany December 30, 1952. He worked at Sun Lumber Company in Paramus after discharge and went into his own business and opened Englewood Lumber Company in Englewood in 1956. On November 4, 1965, fire destroyed Tom Meli's Lumberyard on the corner of East Englewood Avenue and Dean Street in Englewood along with 5 other lumberyards that had burned down in the previous three weeks. Resilient as always, Tom Meli rebuilt Englewood Lumber Company across the street on South Van Brunt Street. On August 6, 1968 fire destroyed that lumberyard also. After the second fire, Tom Meli headed Hackensack Redevelopment in the late sixties to early 70's. Never one to give up Tom Meli started a third lumber business in Englewood from 1976-1978 but the economy struggling and a changing Lumber industry he sold the business and moved down to Little Egg Harbor, NJ where he worked as a Property and Building Manager for Al Madarosian till he retired in 2009 at the age of 80. Tom Meli leaves behind two sons Thomas Meli and his wife Michele and Robert Meli and his wife Gail, his grandchildren are Darryl, Jared, Travis and Holly and great-grandchildren are Samara, Azelyn, Braysen, Elias and Danica. Funeral from Costa Memorial Home Boulevard and Central Ave. Hasbrouck Heights on Saturday, May 27th at 9 AM. Funeral Liturgy from Corpus Christi R.C. Church Hasbrouck Heights at 10 AM. Interment following at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. Visitation Friday, May 26th from 4 - 8 PM.
