Thomas Simmons Obituary

Thomas Joseph Simmons of Livingston, formerly of Cedar Grove, died on Jan. 5. He was 85.

Born in Newark, he lived over 43 years in Cedar Grove before moving to Livingston five years ago.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked as a teacher for many years in the Garfield school system and in Cedar Grove, where he taught seventh and eighth grades at South End School prior to his retirement in 1980.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sally Simmons, his children Nancy Simmons, Thomas Simmons and his wife Emiliya and William Simmons and his wife Patricia. He is also survived by grandsons William, Daniel and Christopher Simmons as well as his sister Margaret Farley and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held at Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was held at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Cedar Grove, followed by services at Rosedale Cemetery in Montclair.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org

Mr. Simmons was my elementary school teacher in the Garfield in the late 50's. I still have fond memories of him and will donate to St Jude's in his name.
