Lloyd Hinchey Obituary

Lloyd E. Hinchey 1943 - 2021
Norwich - Lloyd Edward Hinchey, 77, of Norwich, died on Wednesday, April 21, 2021.
Lloyd was born in Norwich on June 2, 1943, to Paul and Catherine (McMahon) Hinchey, and his childhood was spent in the Melrose Park and Fanning Avenue neighborhoods of Norwich.
Lloyd attended Elizabeth Street School and Huntington School before graduating from Norwich Free Academy (NFA) in 1961. He received a BA in History at the College of the Holy Cross (MA) in 1965, and then he completed his JD at the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1968. Lloyd first practiced law at Legal Aid in Hartford before joining the Norwich law firm of Goldberg, Vasington, & Berkman in the early 1970s. Later, he formed his own firm, Hinchey, Kirker, and Cummings, and he practiced law on Broadway St. for almost 50 years until his retirement in 2019.
Lloyd was a standout athlete in high school and was a four-year member of the varsity baseball and basketball team at NFA. He served as the team co-captain for both basketball and baseball teams during the 1959-1960 and 1960-1961 seasons. During his senior basketball season, Lloyd was named honorary captain of the Connecticut All-State team as the top vote-getter, and he was also named High School All-American in 1961.
Lloyd finished his high school basketball career with 1,222 points, and he played shortstop on NFA baseball teams that won consecutive State Championships in 1960 and 1961. In the 2000s, he was elected to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.
Lloyd received offers from numerous major league baseball teams to play professionally after high school, and he chose to attend The College of Holy Cross on a basketball scholarship. After a breakout freshman season, he suffered a significant knee injury, and while sidelined for two years, Lloyd worked diligently to recover from his injuries and averaged 14 points per game as a senior.
Lloyd really enjoyed being involved in civic organizations in Norwich. He served on Rotary, the Wm. Backus Hospital Board, and the Otis Library Board. Lloyd was also focused on helping the disenfranchised and was proud of his work on the Norwich Redevelopment Agency in the 1970s and 1980s.
Lloyd was incredibly passionate about his work for Norwich Free Academy. He was a class agent from 1992-1996 and then served on the NFA Board of Trustees from 1989-2004. During his tenure on the Board, he was a member of the Slater-Norton Corporation of NFA and the NFA Board of Education. Lloyd also served as the Board Chair from 2001-2004. In 2001, he was inducted into the NFA Alumni Hall of Fame, and in 2013, he became an NFA Honorary Corporator.
Lloyd spent many years coaching his sons' baseball teams at Otrobando Ave., and he enjoyed competing in the tennis tournaments on the Red Armstrong clay courts. He was passionate about his basketball games during lunch hour at the Norwich YMCA, and one of his greatest loves was watching local basketball talent compete at "The Rec"courts on Mahan Drive. He also ran basketball clinics on Saturdays at the YMCA for many years in the 1970s and 1980s.
Lloyd took great joy watching his sons and grandchildren play basketball, baseball, lacrosse, and soccer, though he also loved home landscaping, walking his dogs, cooking, reading the New York Times, and the endless carafe of coffee.
In his later years, he was passionate about his wife's involvement in politics through her seat on Norwich City Council and the Mayoral Office, and he loved hearing about his grandkids academic and athletic endeavors and taking walks on the Niantic Boardwalk.
Lloyd's infectious laugh, great sense of humor, and boundless energy will be remembered by all who knew him.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 35 years, Deberey (Loveland) Hinchey of Norwich, his sons Chris Hinchey and wife Heather (Brown) Hinchey of Columbia, SC; Brendan Hinchey and his wife Terri (Burzycki) Hinchey of Mystic; his five grandsons, Ryan, Camden, Jack, Will, and Cohan, his brothers, Donald, and his wife Linda Hinchey of Glendora, CA, and Matt, and his wife Sherry (Gagnon) Hinchey of Norwich; and sister, Kathy (Hinchey) Garvie of Amston, and numerous nieces and a nephew.
Lloyd's family will receive relatives and friends at the Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home, 490 Voluntown Rd., Jewett City, on Monday, April 26, 2021, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. For online condolences please go to www.gagnepiechowski.com. Due to Covid masks will be required.
On Tuesday, there will be a Mass of Christian burial at Saints Peter and Paul Church at 10:30 a.m., 181 Elizabeth St., Norwich, for friends and family. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Norwich.
Memorial contributions honoring Lloyd's lifelong connection to and leadership at Norwich Free Academy may be sent to NFA Foundation, 321 Broadway, Norwich, CT 06360 or nfafoundation.org/giving.

As a boy growing up in Worcester I attended a number of Lloyd´s freshman games at Holy Cross. Had he not suffered a severe knee injury he would have played in the NBA. Many years later it was my privilege to induct Lloyd into the New England Basketball Hall Of Fame. A gentleman and true scholar athlete. RIP Lloyd. Dan Doyle

To the Hinchey Family:

Please accept my belated condolences.

I played against NFA & Lloyd in the Conn State Basketball Tournament.

He was a very skilled player and his contemporaries said he was an even better person.

Keep the Faith.

I just learned today, June 21, of the passing of Lloyd 2 months ago. I am saddened an shocked to learn of his death. I am a year older then Lloyd but we were teammates on the Elizabeth St School basketball team in 1954-1955. Moving out of town I did not attend NFA. However, I followed his college career at Holy Cross and am aware that he would have been the regional draft of the Boston Celtics if not for his knee injury. Thought out my career as a state trooper I would occasionally meet Lloyd in court where we would visit and catch up. My prayers go out to Deb and all of the Hinchey family. RIP Lloyd.

I just learned the sad news of Lloyd’s passing. He was such a gentleman and as a young workers Comp lawyer so many years ago, he was always kind to me and ready to give advice. When he found out I graduated from Holy Cross, I could do no wrong in his eyes! A great man. We are all diminished with his passing.

Deb, I just heard of Lloyd's passing and am very sad for you. I had the pleasure of working with Lloyd on several worker compensation cases and I knew his heart and ethics were always on the right side. Boy, I wish I could have thrown him a fastball in baseball to see if he was as good as they say. Hope to see you some day, Deb.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Lloyd's passing and extend to all in his family my most supportive and encouraging thoughts and prayers. Particularly during the first two years at NFA, we were often seated together in the numerous classes we shared, and, later, we served gratefully together as class officers during our senior year. While our lives took separate paths after our NFA graduation, I knew Lloyd as a kind and caring person, and a fine man. I am a better person for having known him, and I am grateful. Again, my sincerest condolences to all in is family. Ronn Hodkinson

Lloyd will be missed as a friend from years ago and an outstanding person in the Norwich community. The memory of his smile and laugh will always remain with us. His Holy Cross legacy lived through his daughter-in-law, Heather, and our daughter, Nicole while they were both at "The Cross". His accomplishments at NFA were outstanding and hopefully will inspire many for years to come. We extend our sympathy and prayers to the Hinchey family.

My dad played ball with Lloyd and spoke of him in the highest regard as an athlete, an attorney and a true Norwich focused man. I got to meet him many years ago being introduced by my dad and was astounded that he always remembered my name when he'd see me again.
His altruism and love for this town ran deep. A man of values who always wore a suit and a smile. He will be missed.
My prayers are with his family. In my heart I know he has seen his personal savior face to face and has been granted entrance to his heavenly reward.
