Lynette Aey Obituary

Lynette Judith (Dopler) Aey Died - January 22, 2013 Norwich - Lynette Judith (Dopler) Aey, 90, Norwich, wife of the late Dr. Arthur E. Aey died peacefully on Tuesday January 22, 2013. She was born in Dunkirk, NY, daughter of the late Joseph and Mabel (Stier) Dopler. She was a 1940 graduate of Dunkirk High School, a 1945 graduate of Wittenberg University of Springfield Ohio and a 1946 Graduate of Columbia University- Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City with an ADA degree in Hospital Dietetics and Institutional Management. In 1947, she became an Administrative Dietitian at the Harkness Private Pavilion within the CP Medical Center. On October 14, 1946 at Riverside Cathedral in New York City, she married Arthur E. Aey, M.D. of Dunkirk, NY. Dr. and Mrs. Aey moved to Norwich in 1948 where she served as Chief Dietitian at the Norwich State Hospital. After Dr Aey opened his private practice she became the dietitian/ medical secretary in his office until his death in 1965. In 1966, she joined the faculty at Norwich Free Academy, as part of the Science Department, teaching Earth Science and Health Education. Her tenure lasted 21 years. She received her Masters degree in Science Education with emphases on Audio Visual Technology from UConn in 1976. Mrs. Aey was an Editor for the NASA publications "Monitoring the Earth from Space" and "Apollo-Soyuz Experiments in Space" 1977-1980. She authored, in collaboration with Professor James Skehan, SJ of Boston College, a position paper for the National Association of Geology Teachers' White House Conference entitled "National Priorities in Teacher Training in Geosciences. She wrote two additional published papers on Crustal Evolution. Mrs. Aey received intensive training at the UConn school of Pharmacy and became the Drug Education Coordinator at NFA and was appointed to the Connecticut Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse in 1981. Mrs. Aey was active in the National Association of Geology Teacher having received the "Best Geology Teacher Award", New England section, in 1977. She went on to serve as both Vice President and President of that organization. Mrs. Aey was the recipient of the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation Grant for outstanding teaching at NFA. She received a certificate of Recognition from the State Dept of Education as a participant from Ct. for the Presidential awards for Excellence in science Teaching. In 1986 by invitation of the Educational Testing Service of Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Aey was the only High School Teacher to be included in the ten member development panel to design a Teacher Certification Exam. She was an active member of Park Congregational Church in Norwich, teaching Sunday School for 17 years, serving on the Board of Directors and Executive Board and participating in Bible Study Classes for many years. After her Retirement from NFA in 1987, she enjoyed many active years with numerous clubs and organizations including: The Fortnightly Study Club, "Mary Jones" Art Class, Embroidery Guild of America, Mohegan Chapter of AARP(1004), Retired Teachers of CT, Center for Learning in Retirement at UConn, NL County Retired Teachers, National Button Club (Owanaco Chapter), Kappa Delta, Women's City Club, Norwich Women's City Club (Historian 1989-91), Lyman Allyn Museum and Art Classes, National Button Club (OWANACO Chapter), Kappa Delta National Sorority, Tau Kappa Alpha Forensic Fraternity. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Aey Adams and Thomas E. Adams of Colchester and her son Randolph C. Aey and his dear friend Joanne Dubina of Norwich. Calling Hours will be held at Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich, Friday, Feb. 1 from 5-8 P.M. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday February 2 at 11 A.M. at Park Congregational Church, 283 Broadway, Norwich. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Dr. & Mrs. Arthur E. Aey Memorial Fund at Park Congregational Church.

Randy I am sorry for your loss. My sympathies for you and your family. Your mother was my earth science teacher at NFA. I really enjoyed that class, she made learning fun. My grandparents knew her too - and your father. My grandmother was a nurse at Backus Hospital and my grandfather was a pharmacist there.
