Michael Chapel Obituary

MICHAEL THOMAS CHAPEL 1960 - 2018
HAMPTON - Michael Thomas Chapel, 58, of Hampton, died at home on November 21, 2018. He was born in New London on September 12, 1960 to Clifford and Barbara Chapel.
Michael attended Hampton Consolidated School since Second Grade, followed by Parish Hill High School and then the Vo-Ag program at E.O. Smith High School, graduating in 1978. He completed his Associates Degree at the University of Connecticut, Ratcliff Hicks College of Agriculture in 1980.
Michael followed his interests in plants and landscaping with jobs at several local greenhouses. Ultimately, he started his own business, Chapel's Greenhouse and Landscaping in 1983, which was a Hampton Landmark. Gradually the plant aspect of his business gave way to the landscaping part. Michael was particularly proud of his patio and stone work. There are many examples of his work around Hampton.
Over the last twenty years, Michael became involved in politics within the town. He has been a Selectman for the last fifteen years, as well as serving on multiple boards and commissions. His commitment to the community was extensive, being involved in so many projects around town. He was instrumental in bringing the Mennonite culture to our town, assisting their families in so many ways. His commitment and friendship with the people of the town strengthened every day.
Michael enjoyed hunting and fishing with his boys. He loved playing with children. He always had a story to tell and often lost track of time when telling those stories. He had a passion for helping others and found more enjoyment in giving than receiving as seen by the impact he had on all.
Michael is survived by his partner of 42 years, Lynn Burdick, and his two sons, Zachary and Nicholas. He also leaves his mother and stepfather, Barbara and Michael O'Connor, as well as siblings, Mark (Julie), Kevin (Roberta), Julia (Neal), Holly (Brad), and Jonathan (Suzanne). He leaves nieces and nephews, Tristyn, Shaelyn, Lauren, Catherine, William, and Levi. Michael will be missed by his best friend, Dave as well as Jagger, Pepper and Salty. Michael was predeceased by his father, Clifford.
