Nancy Rauh Obituary

NANCY R. RAUH 1947 - 2017
POMFRET CENTER- Nancy Rourke Rauh passed away on Monday, May 8, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. Nancy was born in Manchester, CT on June 1, 1947 to Joseph A. and Greta (Torrence) Rourke. She graduated from Manchester High School and Saint Louis University with a degree in Business. Prior to settling in Pomfret Center, she lived in Boston, MA and St. Petersburg, FL.
She leaves behind her husband of 39 years John, son Nicholas, daughter Anne, son-in-law Kellen Backer, granddaughter Greta, brother Joseph Rourke and numerous other family members and friends. Nancy was predeceased by her parents, son James, and brother James Rourke.
Nancy had a long career in retail and sales, recently retiring from Arett Sales where she sold lawn and garden supplies across southern New England. Her love of gardening extended beyond her work and she was an avid gardener. She improved the world in ways that went well beyond her beautiful gardens through her volunteer work, from helping Santa answer correspondence to helping build kitchens in a small village in Guatemala.
Nancy loved to entertain, and was apt to invite strangers to dinner or a party. She also enjoyed travel, and recently took up kayaking and deep-sea fishing. She loved the beach, being out on the open water, and cooking. She loved talking with friends and family, arranging flowers, and walking on the Putnam River trail.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Nancy's family from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2017 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday May 13, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. in Most Holy Trinity Church, 568 Pomfret Rd., Pomfret, CT 06259. Burial will follow in Pomfret South Cemetery, Pomfret, CT
While in life Nancy adored flowers, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be directed to the Hale Family YMCA, 9 Technology Park Dr., Putnam, CT 06260 in Putnam, CT, or to Partners in Development, Guatemala Program, 174 High St. #106, Ipswich, MA 01938. John, Anne & Nick,
Please accept our deepest condolences. Our daughter spent many a day at your home with Nancy entertaining the girls from frosting cookies to Girl Scout trips and sleepovers when they were little. Great memories. May she be at peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

To the Family of Nancy....I am so sorry for your loss. What a dear friend she has been....from Lincoln Elementary School in Manchester, CT, including ice skating, girl scouts, and talking together, to junior high dances and high school. We saw each other in Boston after college at her job in Filene's...I was so impressed..she was a manager and while we chatted, all these clerks came to her for authorizations...Then we lost touch as we married and our lives went their separate ways. And, then we re-connected at our 50th high school reunion only to find out that her condo in FL was the next town over from where I live! For the last year and a half we enjoyed kayaking, the beach, having lunch, going out fishing and shopping. We were able to pick up right where we left off. Nancy had the generous spirit of always accepting people without judgement and being very down to earth and friendly and inclusive. I will miss her sparkle and her friendship greatly.

We had many good times together, Nancy. Thanks for the Christmas parties, body surfing at your Misquamicut beach house, and laughs at the Red Lion Inn. It is so hard to come to realize someone of your vigor and love of life is no longer with us. We send our heartfelt sympathy to you, John.
