T.A. Cox Obituary

T.A. Cox September 29, 1921 to March 17, 2011 Plainfield T.A. passed away quietly on March 17 at the Day Kimball Hospice & Palliative Care facility in Putnam; after a long illness. Born in Texarkana, TX, the last of eight children to G.T. and Fannie Ann Cox; a proud WWII Navy Veteran; attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he played varsity football in the 1940s era of Harry Stuhldreher; after graduation, an Assistant Coach working with the freshmen football and baseball athletes until 1950. His working career took him home to Texas, to Colorado, and home again to Texas before retirement and moving to Plainfield where he has lived since 1986. For the next dozen years, they made regular driving trips across the United States to spend part of the year with family in San Diego and points between; then back to Connecticut. Since 1992, T.A. has been the unofficial Curator at the Haul of Fame Truck Museum in Canterbury. In their hay days, the two-building museum was home to more than 230 antique vehicles. A member of Calvary Chapel Canterbury, where he will be missed as the hugger and greeter at the door. Survived by Joycie, his beloved wife of almost 70 years; son Jack, of Ft. Worth, TX; daughter Mary Horkey, of Plainfield; son Billy Joe, of San Diego, CA; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. If you knew him, you liked him for his kind heart, happy eyes and laughter; he loved telling stories and introducing everyone he met to the "Pride and Joy" photo carried in his wallet. Visitation at Dougherty Brothers Funeral Home, 595 Norwich Road, Plainfield on Saturday, March 26, 2011 from 2-4pm. A memorial service to celebrate the life of T.A. Being called "one of his daughters", I will so miss his stories and seeing his big smiling face, along with his hugs, that always followed T.A.

Grandad was truly an amazing man! I have such fun memories of him as a child....I only wish we'd lived closer so we could enjoy eachother more. Our phone calls, too, involved stories & always encouragement.
I think he's made quite an impression on many & absolutely a blessing to all!!
I know I'll see him again & rejoice that he's no longer in pain. To imagine him sitting at the feet of Jesus is so uplifting....
Love to all the family in CT & scattered across!
I love you, Granny & Grandad!

I met T.A.(Tex) on his trip to Washington DC with American Warrior. He was an exceptional man and so many of us who participated on that trip in helping capacities continued long after the trip to contact him. You meet many people in your life, some come and go, and some remain in your thoughts forever. He was one of the people that will remain in my mind eternally. He was a wonderful husband to Joycie, a wonderful friend to many, and absolutely mesmerizing to listen to all he had done in his life. He will be missed by all of us at American Warrior. Our special wishes to all of his family. Sue Ponder (Nowich CT)

Dear Joycie, Mary and the rest of the family. I am very sorry for your loss but we can all rest assured of where T.A. is. Several months ago I visited Calvary Chapel and was greeted with a firm hand shake from T.A. I asked how he was and he confidently told me he was dying. He had no regrets or fear when he told me and I remember walking away so impressed. He was an awesome man and an excellent example of what a Christian man should be. May God comfort you during this time.

Dear Family of Mr. T.A. Cox:
I am a stranger to you and regrettably never had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Cox. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy at your loss. I almost feel like I knew Mr. Cox, because I grew up hearing stories from my dad (Forrest E. Duncan) about his days at Texarkana High School. He and Mr. Cox were in the same graduating class. As a child, I often enjoyed looking through Daddy's yearbook, and the names of his fellow students became very familiar to me. Although I never got the idea they were close buddies, I know that my father had a great deal of respect and affection for the majority of his classmates. It was evident from the yearbook that Mr. Cox was a leader at Texarkana HS, and not just for his talent in sports! I know that they had opportunities to reconnect in later years, as Daddy lived in Fort Worth from 1965 until his passing in August 2003, and he attended many class reunions. A couple of months ago, I ran across programs from some of those gatherings, including updates from the attendees themselves in preparation for the 50-year (I believe) reunion. If members of his Fort Worth family are interested in having copies from the yearbook and a copy his reunion update, I would be most happy to get those to you. It's evident to me that Mr. Cox was a wonderful man who was devoted to his family and friends. Our country has lost yet another member of what I truly believe was "The Greatest Generation". Wishing you peace and comfort in the days ahead.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Anthony (Sheryl) Becan

I am T.A.'s Daughter-in-law.Joy Cox in Ft. Worth
I only had the privlage of knowing my "daddy" for a short time, but oh how I miss him. I miss calling and talking Dallas Cowboys and how we couldn't stand the Patriots. We would joke and laugh and no matter how bad or busy or good my day was, he always made it better. He accepted me for me,
no conditions. I love him with all my heart and even tho we knew the end was near, it does not make it easier. He was the kind of person, that was just always there. It is hard to accept that I can not hear his voice or see him and hug him. He truly was "one of a kind" and I know he is with God telling his stories and God saying, "yes T.A. I was there.
To the daughter,sons,and grandchildren,
celebrate his life. I only wish I had had more time with him.

I only knew Mr. Cox (Tex as he asked to be called) from phone calls and emails, but I felt like we were good friends. He was always so warm and kind and never forgot any of the things we had talked about. He was more than just a valued customer...he was a true and wonderful friend. I am so blessed to have known him.

Dear Joycie, Mary, Jerry, Alicia and Luke and family,
What a wonderful impact he had on so many lives. You can certainly celebrate a life that was full and loved by many. He will be missed.

I already miss T.A.---his great e-mails, his waiting by the elevator at Calvary Chapel handing out the church bulletins, his great greeting "Good Mornin' Mornin ' Glory". He would not allow me to have a bulletin until he got his hug. His love for his beloved Joycie and his children. He always had a funny story for me. He had a twinkle in his eye---always made my day at church. He is with his beloved Savior now. Hugs and Blessings, Bev Pukalo

T.A. will be sadly missed by anyone who got the chance to meet him. He knew every inch of the Haul of Fame and you were never dissapointed nor was there ever a time you left there not learning something new about the museum pieces. I am so glad I was given the chance to know him. Truly a gentlemen and always had a smile to greet you. The world has lost such a good man.
