James Stewart Obituary

James "Jimmy" Stewart Jr., 61, of North Platte, passed away on March 8, 2022, in North Platte. Jimmy was born on July 27, 1960, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, son of James E. Stewart Sr. and Catherine (Cash) Stewart. Jimmy graduated from North Platte High School in 1978. He became the first state wrestling champion from North Platte during his junior year in 1977 and took third place at state during his senior year. After his first-place win, he became the first wrestler to make popular the somersault winner flip. Jimmy also competed while in high school on the championship gymnastics trampoline team. He worked for several years for the Union Pacific Railroad and then owned and operated J & J flooring company, specializing in carpet and flooring installation. Jimmy was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed playing bass guitar in several local bands including Innocent Mischief and the Latin Jam Band. He also played for the church. Jimmy never met a stranger and loved everyone he met. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Danny Stewart. Surviving are his special friend and companion, Deb Wurl and her children, Brock (Emily) Wurl, Jackie (Mike) Goede and Derek (Hannah) Wurl and grandchildren, Norah, Caleb, Natalie, Quinn, Eva, Baker, Barrett and Brynn; daughter, Brooke Stewart and grandchildren, Vivian and Valon; sister, Paula McDowell; several nieces and nephews; and special extended family and friends, Pat and Bunny Hinde. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation, 301 E. State Farm Road, memo on the check to James Stewart Memorial. Online condolences may be shared at capentermemorial.com. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, at Messiah Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Cottingham officiating. Brooke i was so saddened to see the loss of your dad, he always had a smile on his face and was a good friend for many years, even though we lost touch for several years, whenever we would run into each other it was like we just talked yesterday. As Jr High and High school classmates, we’ll always remember Jimmy smiling and laughing. We’ll treasure our memories with him as a champion wrestling team mate for Mike and an awesome choir mate for me. We know he’s in a better place and continuing to make everyone smile.

I had the honor of knowing this amazing man through my son Nate Rivera. Jimmy employed my son and they spent many years together laying carpet and floors for the many families in North Platte. They were quite the team when working together. Jimmy was such a "big brother" to my son and watched over him and took him under his wing teaching him lifetime skills. I will be forever grateful that Jimmy did this for my son. Jimmy had a gift that made everyone he knew or got to know feel special and loved! Rest In Peace my friend

Never at a loss for words! That was Jimmy. What a great guy! Several years ago we hired him to lay some carpet. What should have been a morning job ended up all day. He talked all day about hunting and music. Even stopped to play guitar with Mike! He will be missed.
