Michael Fletcher Obituary

Michael Wayne "Mike" Fletcher

February 14, 1968 - May 21, 2025

Michael Wayne "Mike" Fletcher, 57, of Maxwell, passed away in an accident on May 21, 2025, at his home.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1968, to Don and Rose (Feeney) Fletcher in North Platte. Mike graduated from Maxwell High School in the class of 1986. He attended college and played football at Chadron State, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in business.

Mike was united in marriage to Annette Derra on July 31, 1987, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. The couple first met when they were babies in the nursery, as they were both born at the North Platte hospital two days apart. Their lives were destined to cross as they later became high school sweethearts. They lived in the Maxwell area for many years, where they built their dream home next to the family farm and raised their three boys.

Mike hired on the Union Pacific Railroad on April 20, 1990, and worked as a locomotive engineer alongside his brother Mitch. He retired on Dec. 1, 2022. Over his 32 years at UPRR, Mike made many lifelong friends.

In addition to working for Union Pacific, Mike pursued his passion for farming and ranching. He and his brother, Morgan, took over the family farm from their father, Don, and in 2013, M&M Land and Cattle was born.

Everything Mike did was "full throttle." He loved everybody and his home was open to everyone; Mike knew no strangers. Mike will be remembered as the life of the party. Mike loved to host Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Husker games. Mike loved cooking for his friends and family and hosting parties. Mike always helped anyone with their projects and was known as a "redneck engineer." He loved a good auction and couldn't pass by a deal. He enjoyed making homemade spirits, including his famous homemade wine, LeggSpredda. Mike loved playing sports and watching sports. He was always front row at his kids and grandkids' activities. Family was the center of his life, and he was immensely proud of his sons, loved his daughters-in-law, and would drop everything for his beloved grandkids. Not to mention his nieces and nephews, cousins and countless friends. Mike was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, scuba diving and any outdoor activities. Mike taught his sons to hunt and fish and was continuing the tradition with his grandkids. Mike will be remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and above all, a friend.

Preceding him in death are his father, Donald Fletcher; brother-in-law, Troy Derra; grandparents, John and Fern Feeney; grandparents-in-law, Donald and Yvonne Derra and "Grandma B."

Survivors include wife, Annette of Maxwell; sons, Cody (Marci) Fletcher of Maxwell, Austin Fletcher of Gothenburg and Brandon (Madeline) Fletcher of Maxwell; grandchildren, Camden Fletcher, Eden Fletcher and Calvert "Michael" Fletcher; his mother, Rose Fletcher of Maxwell; in-laws, Larry and Diane Derra of North Platte and Mike and Patti Earl of North Platte; siblings, Mitch (Karolyn) Fletcher of Maxwell, Morgan (Jen) Fletcher of Maxwell and Murray (Michaela) Fletcher of Elmwood; sisters-in-law, Missy (Wade) Koenen of Sedgwick, Colorado, and Tiffany (Scott) LeTourneau of North Platte; and many nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family in Mike's name. Online condolences may be shared at adamsswanson.com.

Service is at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at the Hansen Ranch, 304 S Effenbeck Road, Curtis. Please feel free to dress casual in your favorite Hawaiian shirt to honor Mike. Visitation is from noon to 7 p.m., with family present from 5-7:00 PM, Sunday, May 25, at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

We are just absolutely heartbroken and devastated to hear of Mike's passing, and grieve deeply along with Mike's family and extensive network of friends.
From his "can-do" spirit to his joyful smile and giving spirit, Mike's life was truly one well-lived!
Thank you for taking me to play golf last summer, Mike - I had a blast with you, and your boys and Alex at Wild Horse for my birthday! So many happy memories, so many happy times together....
We're just so grateful that we were home for Mom Fletcher's birthday at the end of April and were able to gather around the BBQ for Mike's awesome grilling and share a laugh over an ice cold beer or glass of wine...
Taken home way too soon, and we send our love from California, and I'm glad Cheri was able to make it home to be with all of you, and I wish I could have made it home with her, but know my heart weeps alongside all of you and we are praying for your hurting hearts...
God bless and receive Mike, and be with all of you in the Fletcher family. We love you all...

Over 20 years ago our family was fortunate enough to have the Fletcher's become a part of our lives. When Joe hired on with the railroad,Mike was his mentor and quickly they became friends. He also mentored our son when he hired on. When we were looking to buy a house, Mike told us to buy a house in Maxwell so we could be " neighbors " and we did. From kids graduations, wedding celebrations, birthdays , holidays or Husker days, we shared many laughs and great times. Mike was the kind of friend that you were lucky to have! He was always there to make you laugh or lend a helping hand. He truly did never meet a stranger. His positive attitude was infectious. Our family will always cherish the moments we
had and Mike will always be remembered.

Words cannot express how heartbroken our family is upon hearing the news of Fletch’s passing. The pain runs deep, and right now, it’s hard to believe he is truly gone.

Fletch was more than a childhood friend—he was one of my best friends and like a brother. We grew up side by side—playing sports, running the river, getting into trouble, and eventually walking the same career path. I always joked that he was the reason I went bald—he pulled my hair enough during our childhood fights to make it true. Make no mistake, it was well deserved.

Losing him has left a hole that words can’t fill. But even in this grief, I find comfort in the friendship we shared. I know he’d want us to smile, to laugh, to live fully—even when it’s hard. I promise to carry his spirit forward and to honor his memory by living with the kind of heart he had—big, open, and full of zest. He lit up every room and every gathering, and though we all ask, “Why so young?”—he lived every day like there was no tomorrow.

Some of my favorite memories are the simple ones—poker nights where he’d win a pile of chips, flash that grin, and say, “Well boys, I hate to take your money and leave, but it’s late.” And of course, hanging out with him was never quiet for long—Annette would always chime in, and I can still hear him saying, “Would you just be quiet and let me talk?”

He was more than a friend. He was family. He still is—and he always will be.

Rest peacefully, Fletch. You are deeply loved by all who crossed your path. Until we meet again.

Mike was truly excited about doing things and being with his family, he loved talking about them and sharing their wins. What a great man, and a great person to talk with. Always seemed to be helping others and giving of his time especially when he retired from the railroad. The little time that I knew Mike he touched my life. He will be missed.

A finner man I have never met, he came from a tremendous family and created a tremendous one as well.
This leaves a hole in a lot of hearts but the Love and kindness that Mike taught us will lead us through.
Mike and Annette took fantastic care of my wife while I spent weeks in the hospital a few years ago, from making sure she was OK to loading up a bunch of tools and installing a handicap accessible shower so that I could come home.
One in a Million very proud to call him my Brother from another mother.

Mike, thank you for showing me what Nebraska is all about. Your generous and infectious nature was such a blessing to everyone you came across, I witnessed that during my short trip. The way you led your family with an enviable balance of productivity and fun was such a wake up for me. Coming from the hustle and bustle of a city on the east coast, I was thrilled to experience what felt like the adult version of summer camp. You gave that experience to your family and to anyone they brought into the fold. Thank you for making me feel welcome and for loving Maddie so well over the years. To Mike’s family, I’m so heart broken for you all as you navigate life without such a wonderful man. I hope you find ways to bring pieces of him into all your experiences and I hope you can feel him smiling down upon you all. Much love, McKenna.

Mike...the family will never be the same without you at the table. You were one of a kind and definitely one who cared about those around you. Your infectious smile and thoughtfulness will be missed. I don't understand how your shattered world will go on without you...but somehow with The Lord's help and restorative strength the family and your wide network of friends will. AND in keeping with your legacy of servanthood when something truly is within our power to 'Do' OR say yes to, we will be the ones who jump in to help someone else, lending a hand or skill. Every time as we give ourselves away in some fashion it will be an act of honoring them and you. Your acts of kindness, and servanthood modeled for us can only flow from a heart of gratitude and one manifested in humility. Your legacy will live on, rippling out in waves of kindness and the strength of being present in the lives of others. Even if it's simply to come along side someone and cheer them on. You will be GREATLY missed. May you rest in eternal peace. You better be waiting for me at the gate or I'll hunt heaven down looking for a bear hug. I pray the Lord's comfort is felt by each and every one who loved you and grieves your loss. My love and deepest sympathy to Rose, Cousin Annette, Cody, Austin and Brandon.

Annette and Family:

My deepest condolences to each of you on Mike's passing.

Years back Mike invited me to watch the rodeo at Nebraskaland Days. We sat in the second row, and as the fans filed in, every one stopped to greet Mike. I never met anyone who was so well liked and thought of by his hometown folks.

Heaven will be a bit brighter place, and I suspect quite a bit noisier, as wherever Mike was, there was sure to be a good time going on.

May he rest in peace.

I'm very sad to hear about the passing of Mike. I played football with Mike at Chadron State and we became good friends during my years at there.
