Dorothy Abel Obituary


Dorothy Evelyn Abel, at the age of 100, passed away November 7, 2018 at the home of her youngest grandson, Todd Figgins and wife Phyllis, where she resided for the last year.

Dorothy was born December 22, 1917 in Altavista, Virginia, second to the oldest of seven girls born to Noah and Pearl Martin.

Dorothy worked hard and played even harder. She worked as a waitress at a number of restaurants for many years. She retired from Saint Joseph's Hospital as a dietician in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dorothy enjoyed traveling and adventure. After retirement, she moved to Bunnell, Florida to be near her only child/daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Kenny Reed.

She is predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Reed; her parents, Noah and Pearl Martin; and her sisters, Ambler Martin, Frances Foster, Shirley Trone, Juanita Ott, and Louise Brown.

Dorothy is survived by her youngest sister, Brendia Metz of Toms Brook, Virginia; and three grandsons, Don Figgins and wife Ginny of Arvada Colorado, Scott Figgins of Strasburg, Virginia and his estranged wife Leah, and Todd Figgins and wife Phyllis of Gainesville, Virginia.

She is also survived by her six great-grandchildren, Liana Conway and Audra Figgins, both of Arvada, Colorado, Kenny Figgins of Gainesville, Virginia, Stephanie Figgins with the U.S. Coast Guard stationed in Miami Florida, and Jerry Figgins and Noah Figgins, both of Strasburg, Virginia.

Dorothy is survived by a great many nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces.

There will be a private remembrance in her honor Sunday, November 25, 2018 by her surviving sister, Brendia Metz.
