Mary Fadely Obituary

Mary Louise Crangle Fadely, 88, of Woodstock, Virginia, passed away peacefully in her sleep Thursday, March 13, 2025, at her home surrounded by family. She was born on January 14, 1937, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Hildreth Needles Crangle and Byron W. Crangle. After the passing of her mother at age 6, she was lovingly raised by her stepmother, Eunice Johnson Crangle.

Mary is survived by her husband of 67 years, Alfred Landon Fadely as well as her daughter, Brenda Lee Thompson, of Nokesville, and her husband Boyd F. (Ducie) Thompson. She also had four grandchildren: Tyler Fadely (Nikki) of Felton, Delaware; Lindsey Fadely (Willie) of Magnolia, Delaware; Michael Thompson (Corinne) and Ryan Thompson (Allison) all of Warrenton, Virginia. She was also a proud great-grandmother to eight that she cherished. She was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Lee Yando and stepbrother, Eddie Hohl of Iowa. The recent loss of her son, Kevin Mark Fadely of Maurertown, left a heavy burden on her heart.

Mary grew up in Iowa and graduated from Knoxville High School where she lettered in basketball. At the youthful age of 18 she left home for Washington, D.C., where she went to work for the FBI in the fingerprinting division. It was here that she met and later married Landon. After getting married, she began her career at the Bureau of National Affairs where she worked on and off for about 20 years, leaving only for a brief time so she could accompany Landon while he was stationed in Japan serving in the U.S. Army.

In 1977, Mary and Landon left the Suitland, Maryland area to relocate their family to Woodstock, Virginia. For a short time, Mary served as secretary for Mr. William Dalke and the Community Theater. In 1979, they opened Fadely's House of Colors, a paint and wallpaper store just south of Woodstock. Upon retiring from his insurance career, Landon joined her full-time in 1981 and they ran the business together until closing it in 1999.

Following retirement, Mary worked part-time at the Free Press. She was also active in the Woodstock Woman's Club, participating in Woodstock home tours and the many other activities the club offered. She also volunteered her time with The Woodstock Museum and enjoyed many years supporting Landon and his many activities with the Hamburg Ruritan Club. These included supporting the Edinburg Ole Time Festival and the Empty Stocking Fund. Together, Landon and Mary adopted a 2 mile stretch of roadway and could be observed on many occasions picking up litter from the sides of Mill Road. Mary was also a member of St. Jacobs Lutheran Church in Edinburg.

A celebration of life service will be held at Valley Funeral Service, 14116 S. Middle Road in Edinburg, Virginia, on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. Prior to the service, family will meet with friends from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. The service will be conducted by The Reverend Katie Gosswein of St. Jacob's Lutheran Church in Edinburg. A private burial will follow at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hamburg Ruritan Club, P.O. Box 66, Edinburg, Virginia 22824 or Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Suite 405, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
