Mary Susan Lanier

Mary Susan (Wine) Lanier, 98, of Bridgewater died December 6, 2008, at the Bridgewater Home where she had been a resident for several years.

Mary was born in Forestville, Virginia on January 15, 1910, and was a daughter of the late Jacob David and Kitty Sine (Huffman) Wine.

Mary taught school for forty-one years following graduation from Madison State Teachers College in 1934 with a B.S. degree. She began her career in a one-room schoolhouse at the Fork in Warren County and moved to Fairfax County in 1944, where she taught elementary, junior high and high school and served as an assistant principal. She retired from Francis C. Howard High School in Alexandria in 1972 and volunteered as a driver for the American Cancer Association. In this capacity she extended a warm and caring nature to those whom she transported. She traveled nationally and internationally and moved to the Bridgewater Retirement Community in 1982.

Mary was a member of Bridgewater Baptist Church, Bridgewater, where she taught Sunday school for many years and worked with the various functions of the Church.
She was united in marriage on May 25, 1948 to Rev. Raymond R. Lanier, who preceded her in death in 1958.

Mary is survived by a stepson, Dr. Andrew S. Lanier and wife Marybeth of Floyd, VA; two brothers, Jesse C. Wine and wife Naomi of Woodstock and Rev. J. Floyd Wine of Winchester. She had several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by brothers Rev. Galen D. Wine, Isaac J. Wine and Ira M. Wine.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 9, 2008, at Mount Comfort Cemetery, Alexandria, VA, with Rev. Kelly A. Lane officiating.
