Samuel Zuckerman Obituary

A funeral service for Sam Zuckerman will be held on Monday, May 14, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal conducted by Rabbi Scott Sperling. Burial will follow in Shenandoah Memorial Park in Winchester. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. and a Masonic Tribute will be held at 1:50 p.m.

Sam Zuckerman was born in Winchester, VA, the son of Louis and Celia Rose Zuckerman.

He started business in Front Royal in 1938 as part of Louis Zuckerman and Sons. The corporation is now known as Zuckerman Metals, Inc. and Sam served as owner and CEO for 74 years.

Sam entered the US Army in 1942 and served until the end of the war, seeing service in England, France, Belgium, and Germany. He was discharged as the NCOIC of the 136th Medium Maintenance Ordinance Co. and was one of five brothers who proudly served. Using the technical and management skills he acquired in the service Sam reopened the business as a recycling center and machine shop. He trained machinists under the GI Bill and expanded the business to include a new steel center, fabrication shop, mobile crane and steel erection service and Air Products Gas Distributorship.

Sam married in 1948 and fathered three children: Cheri Rose, Julia Paige and David Martin. Rosie served as president of the corporation until her untimely passing in 1997.

Sam served in numerous charitable and civic capacities in Front Royal. He served as Town Council Member, chaired the Community Chest (United Way), Chamber of Commerce Board, Board of Trustees of Warren Memorial Hospital and as Chair of the F&M and BB&T Bank Advisory Boards of Front Royal. A charter member of the Jaycees, a life member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, he was also a member of Unity Lodge #146 AF&AM and the recipient of their Community Builders Awards well as serving as the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. He was a Past-President, honorary member, and multiple Paul Harris Fellow of the Front Royal Rotary Club.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Rosie, both parents, two brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie; son, Marty; brothers, Charles and Aaron; and a sister, Betty.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Winchester, VA 22601 or to the Warren County Humane Society, 1245 Progress Drive, Front Royal, VA 22630.

Dear Julie and Marty, we will miss Sam as he was one of 'our family' - always coming to all the graduation parties for our three children. Jennifer, Robyn and Bob Jr. always called him "Uncle Zuck" and thought the world of him! There was no one like Uncle Zuck. He will always be close in our hearts and prayers and I know he is so happy to see Rosie again! Our love to you, Janice and Bob Moore

Julie and Marty may God Bless you during this sorrowful time. I know Daddy thought of Sam as a brother and a great friend. Of course all of us kids were very fond of all of you too. I don't know if Daddy will come, he gets upset at times like these. I know you will understand if he doesn't. Again God Bless. Bill Perry and family.
