William Sours Obituary
William Leonard Sours (Leonard), 98, of Maurertown, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2021 at Dutch Haven Assisted Living in Maurertown, Virginia.
Leonard Sours was born on November 5, 1922, to William and Florence Sours in Luray, VA. His family moved to Washington, DC and then to Fairfax, VA where Leonard attended Fairfax High School. During World War II, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the 3rd Marine Division Headquarters Communications. He was stationed on the island of Guam in the Pacific with the Navajo Code Talkers.
After the war, Leonard returned to Northern Virginia where he worked for C&P Telephone Company for almost 30 years. During this time, he met and married Ollie Briggs and they had a son, William W. Sours. Leonard was a charter member of the Merrifield Lions Club, held offices in the club, and was an active volunteer for the Lions that served and advocated for the blind and visually impaired.
In retirement, Leonard and Ollie moved to the Shenandoah Valley full-time. They purchased property in Maurertown where Leonard raised cows. They also had a thriving antique business in the area (until eBay came along).
Leonard was predeceased by his wife, Ollie, his parents, William and Florence, his sisters, Linda and Alice, his brothers, Howard and Ralph. He is survived by his son, William (Kathy), and two grandchildren, Thomas and Kate.
A memorial service will be held at Zion Christian Church, 1772 Zion Church Road, Maurertown, Virginia 22644 on November 6, 2021, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Semper Fi Fund or Kindred Hospice, Harrisonburg, Virginia. Interment will be in 2022 at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA.
