Meghan Burkhart-Smith Obituary
She was born on April 6, 1992, in Dothan, Ala., to William and Becky Burkhart Smith. Meghan was a junior at South Walton High School. She was a varsity softball player, a member of the Anchor Club, National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. She was also a People to People Student Ambassador, and a manager of the South Walton High football team. She loved her horses, surfing, shopping and spending time with her friends.
Meghan was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Robert and Claudia Smith.
Meghan is survived by her parents, Bill and Becky Smith of Freeport; maternal grandparents, Edmund and Rosa Maria Burkhart of Vir-ginia; one brother, Michael Scott Smith and wife Stacy of New Mexico; one sister, Chelsea Suzanne Burkhart-Smith of Freeport; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and one niece, Abby Smith.
A time of visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at St. Rita Catholic Church, 137 Moll Drive, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at St. Rita Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Gulf Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Meghan-Burkhart-Smith Charitable Foundation, c/o Pelican Real Estate, 42 Business Centre Drive, Suite 106, Miramar Beach, FL 32550. Funds will be used for the SWHS athletic department.

As time passes and our lives change, we come to realize that what matters most are the friends and family closest to us. The care and devotion that we bestow upon our loved ones is proof of something far beyond our understanding. Whether it be supernatural or not, love is something that every human is capable of understanding at one point in their life. When the love that we possess for someone is severed through death, we can only grieve. For once that love is attained, we fully comprehend the power that it gives us. We accomplish the insurmountable in the name of love and yet, death is the one thing we cannot conquer. Again, time will set its pace and the love that everyone possesses for Meghan will only grow. As for the journey, it has not come to an end. You and yours will reunite with Meghan and everything will be grand, with time.

Words are totally inadequate at a time such as this. However, I would like to let you all know that I love you and am praying for comfort to your hearts. Meghan was such a delightful ray of sunshine.
