Ray Wilson Obituary

Ray Wilson, Age 86, of Crestview, Fla., passed away Monday, Feb. 10, at home with his family at his side. He was born in Campton, Fla., on Dec. 27, 1927, to William Lester and Bamma Miller Wilson. After graduation from High School, Ray joined the U.S. Army in 1946 and served two years. He married Virginia Boggs. He was afforded the opportunity to run for Sheriff in 1956. He was the longest serving Sheriff in Okaloosa County serving from 1956-1976.
As a youngster, his father, Lester Wilson, Chief of Police for Crestview, was murdered while running for Sheriff, Ray was 12 years old. Wilson said "I didn't get to be Sheriff just to catch my father's killers," he said. "I really thought I could do a good job in law enforcement." 18 years after his father's death arrest were made and the men convicted. Readers Digest published an article of his quest for his father's killers and his interview.
He was known for his cowboy boots and hat and to everyone he met he warmly greeted them with Hey Neighbor. A Minister of the Gospel, he shared the Good Word with all and would pray anywhere with anybody.
He is preceded in death by a daughter, Susan.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Virginia Wilson; three children, Stuart, Scott and Sharon; six grandchildren, and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held at Noon, Saturday, Feb. 15, at New Beginnings Church in Crestview with a visitation beginning at 11 a.m. Graveside Honors will be provided by the Okaloosa County Sheriffs Department at the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
