Daniel Sompel Obituary

Daniel "Dan" H. Sompel
Born: February 6, 1942
Died: September 13, 2025
Daniel "Dan" H. Sompel, 83, of Johnsburg, IL, passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2025. A lifelong resident of Johnsburg, he was deeply rooted in his community and proud to call it home.
He was born on February 6, 1942 in Woodstock, IL to parents Joseph and Marie (Diedrich) Sompel.
In his younger years, he played baseball for the Johnsburg Tigers, where his love for the game was matched only by his dedication to his team. Dan carried that same spirit into his work, building a career as a skilled carpenter and later running his own excavating company. Dan proudly served in the United States Army in the 60's.
Known for his fondness for red vehicles, including several prized red Corvettes; he brought a flash of color and personality wherever he went.
Faith played a central role in his life. A devoted member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, he served his parish for many years, including the humble but meaningful role of grave site attendant, a task he carried out with care and respect.
Never one to shy away from a new challenge, he learned to ride a motorcycle in his 70s, often joining Father Jacek on rides that brought him great joy and freedom.
He will be remembered for his hard work, strong faith, adventurous spirit, and the lasting impact he had on his family, friends, and community.
Dan is survived by his sisters; Betty Sompel, Carol Scholle, and Louise Flood, Brother; Richard (Deborah) Sompel, Nephews; Jonathan Inman, Scott Sompel, and Kevin (Yana) Sompel, Niece Angie Caton, Great-Niece Kelly Ward, Great-Nephew Ben Ward, Aunt Bernice Diedrich, and many cousins.
Dan is preceded in death by both of his parents Joseph and Marie Sompel, Sister Nancy Inman, and his brother-in-laws Matthew Scholle, Edward Flood and Jess Inman.
A Visitation for Dan will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2025 3:00pm-7:00pm at Colonial Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday September 22, 2025 at 11:00am with the burial to follow.

"Well done my good and faithful servant" - Matthew 25:23 This is the Dan we will remember. Having lived next door for 13 years, he was a wonderful neighbor, a trusted friend and a loving father & grandfather figure. He will be greatly missed in this world. Heaven is a better place with him in it. Our deepest condolences to the family. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
