David Payne Obituary

David Otto Payne
Born: November 7, 1939 in Huntley, IL
Died: August 25, 2025 in Chicago, IL

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of David Otto Payne on August 25, 2025, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. David was born November 7, 1939, in Huntley, IL, to Charles H. and Lydia E. (Steinke) Payne. He married the love of his life, Marie Ann Hunter, on March 17, 1962, both graduates of Woodstock High School. David and Marie resided in Hartland Township for their entire married life, living happily in tune with the birds, wildlife, and farmland that surrounded them. As a former farmer, carpenter, and plumbing supply expert, David was a jack of all trades whose invaluable skillset benefitted everyone around him, including the many 4-H-ers he mentored as a leader for 27 years. He enjoyed teaching & playing pinochle with his grandchildren, gardening, and rooting for his beloved Cubs. David was the kindest and gentlest soul there was, and he was cherished by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marie; his children, Nicole (James) Perry of Mooresville, IN; Elizabeth (Jason) Carlson of Evanston, IL; Dawn (Don Cotter) Payne of Arena, WI; his grandchildren Ben, Bridget, James, Paul, Emma, Gretchen, Charlie, and Gabriel; his great-grandson Matthew David; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Harold, Roger, Richard, Ronald, & Cecil.
Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. with a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 29, 2025 at Saunders Funeral Home & Crematory, 1745 S. Eastwood Dr., Woodstock, IL 60098. Burial to immediately follow at McHenry County Memorial Park in Woodstock.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer's Association in memory of David Otto Payne.
