Donald Speer Obituary

FOX RIVER GROVE – Donald "Don" Lee Speer, 59, of Fox River Grove, passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.
He was born Oct. 16, 1951, in Chicago, to Leland "Ike" Speer and Eva Clodfelter.
Don was a 1969 graduate of Palatine High School and was known as a hardworking, athletic and all-around witty guy to his many friends. Don was married to his high school sweetheart, Lynne Wiegelman, until 2003, with whom he remained best friends and committed to family.
Following a life-changing injury in November 1990, Don was welcomed back home by family, friends and a community full of support and love for him. His personal story is one that has touched many lives. His personality is one full of charisma and character that outlives him.
Don had a love for all things outdoors, wildlife, Chicago sports, classic rock and moving lyrics, old movies and new "recipes" for onscreen drama and good eats. Above all, Don had a love for raising his family, visiting with friends old and new, and taking care of those who took care of him through the years. His tender soul was witnessed when he interacted with his adored four-legged companions. Don was a man who lived to tell a "good story" and reminisce about life. He leaves a legacy of generosity, a sense of humor, a strong spirit, and a will to live.
A very proud father of five, Don is survived by his loving children, Kelly (Mike) Hoffman of McHenry, Claire (Thomas) Kraemer of Cary, Leland Speer of Chicago Ridge, Katie (Keith) Bjornson of Cary and Scott Speer of Fox River Grove; and his grandchildren, Daniel, Jack, Ryan, Stella and Leah. He also is survived by his loving sister, Cheryl Allman; and his niece, Melea Allman, both of Monticello.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leland "Ike" Speer; and his beloved mother, Eva Clodfelter.
The visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. (Route 176), Crystal Lake. A remembrance service will follow at 7 p.m. to celebrate Don's life. Stories, memories and prayers are welcome from all who wish to contribute.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, 345 E. Superior St., Chicago, IL, 60611, www1.ric.org/donate-online, or 312-238-6013.

I am a close friend of Cheryl’s and live in Monticello, IL. Cheryl often talks about her brother and his sense of humor and acceptance of life’s hardships. He is an inspiration to all who know and love him and to those of us who never met him. His strength and courage live on in our hearts. May our Lord’s promises of joy, peace, and everlasting life bring comfort and restoration to you.

Such a loss is hard to explain...Don was so much more than a casual friend to us. His dry humor will be missed forever, as well as his stories. His great compassion, and the wisdom to help sort out life will be so very missed. Alex loved his "taster" pal, and his many dishes were Don's joy. My own attachment to Don was different, and our many hours talking about the Lord will be my most treasured memory. I know where he is, and I know he is dancing. R.I.P. friend!

To the Speer Family:
I could never tell you how many times I thought my gut would split from Don. He was one of the funniest people I have ever known and also like a big brother to me during our teenage years. The only one I ever knew who ate vanilla ice cream with peas and had the "miracle cure" for cramps. He was one special guy and I am sure you will all miss his laugh! Cheryl, my thoughts and prayers are with you..
Godspeed, Rocky Raccoon!

The world just lost one of it's brightest stars, but I know he is now shining down on us and dancing again, Don't cry for what we lost, smile for what we had, one beautiful man!
