He was a teacher of mine in 1992 and 93. I remember watching Bill Clinton being sworn in as president on his classroom tv. Before him I was somewhat indifferent to history as a subject, but thanks to his teaching, and the teaching of other historians, I pursued my own bachelors degree in history.

Jim Locke was my 6th grade teacher at Central Elementary School, Crystal Lake (now Husmann Elementary) in 1981-82. He was one of my favorite teachers, and definitely an inspiration for me (especially as I am now teaching private music students). He was my first teacher who was left-handed, and as I am left-handed I appreciated having a teacher at the blackboard who could demonstrate handwriting for me.
Every morning, he would ask his students to handwrite a journal entry. He would have written an interesting quote or short story on the blackboard and our first assignment of the day was to copy this text into our own notebook designated as a journal. Occasionally, the journal entry was a prompt to write a creative paragraph or two. He would occasionally check our journals for handwriting and also learn more about his students through them. (I think I still have my journal somewhere -- I will look for it this week!)
His curriculum was unique, often different than the typical 6th grade curriculum. Our class would be immersed in a special topic (Ancient Egypt, Medieval Times, etc.) and the students would be inspired to spend a whole week researching, creating drawings and props, and decorating the classroom. In addition, we also had opportunities to do creative book reports. I did a book report on “Dracula” by writing a script and inviting classmates to provide the voices to record a radio show using a small tape recorder brought from home.
About ten years ago, I returned to Crystal Lake as an adult. I enjoyed seeing Mr. Locke at local concerts or events in which I participated or attended. He always had a kind and inspiring thing to say whenever I saw him. He will be greatly missed!

I had the pleasure of knowing Jim when he taught at Husmann Elementary and Bernotas Middle school. He taught both of my children in sixth grade. I worked as a parent at both of those schools and got to know Jim as a friend as well. He will be greatly missed. A great teacher and a equally nice human being.
