Michael Wietlispach Obituary

Michael A. Wietlispach
Born: May 15, 1957 in Moline, IL
Died: January 1, 2022 in Crystal Lake, IL
We are saddened to share news that Michael Wietlispach passed away on New Year's Day, suddenly and unexpectedly. Mike was born in Moline, IL on May 15th, 1957 as the second of six children. He attended Sterling High School and Eureka College where he excelled in athletics and is a "Hall of Famer" for two sports at each school. In college, Mike was a member of the Lamda Chi Alpha fraternity, which provided hilarious stories and lifetime friends.
"Big Mike," as nearly everyone referred to him, was a salesman's dream according to his family. When grandchildren started arriving, he bought an entire daycare center's collection of toys and books, then turned the basement into the kid's zone. A Facebook marketplace connoisseur, he was constantly adding to his toy collection, much to the chagrin of his loving wife who still doesn't understand why you need every plastic figurine that Disney has made in the last 50 years. His seven grandchildren Mara, Aiden, Lily, Lexi, Theo, Willa, and Shay will sorely miss having such a gentle giant to play with them and read to them.
Mike played golf weekly, often with his college friends and brother, Pat. Whether they were at Redtail where Mike had been a volunteer for years, or at any simulator around the area, he was not a good golfer. Most of the time he didn't keep score, instead keeping track of how many "pars" he had and estimating from there. Mike was also an avid fisherman, with a boat slipped on Bang's Lake in Wauconda for the last decade. He cherished the time spent on his boat with family and friends.
As a high school science teacher and football coach for over 35 years, he influenced thousands of people during his career. He was locally involved in NISRA, Indian Guides, Crystal Lake Senior Services, Continental Little League, and the YMCA throughout his 35+ years living in Crystal Lake. You couldn't go anywhere without someone recognizing him, and he had friends everywhere.
In lieu of sending flowers, please take this advice from the "Big Mike" playbook. Write a handwritten note to someone letting them know what they mean to you. Care not about someone's political ideals, appearance, age, capabilities, etc. and just care for them. Do something nice for someone else, whenever you have the opportunity.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Cheryl, and three sons, Adam (Talita), Chris (Katie), and Tim (Laura). He is also survived by his five siblings: Pat, Denise, Bryan, Todd, and Danielle. He leaves behind dozens of cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends.

Maybe it´s our "second oldest" club that binds us
Mike was always there to listen, talk, offer kindness. He was so good to my dad Uncle Cork
also a second oldest.
We had plans to meet at Franks Pizza in Silvis Il after the holidays as we had done so often
Heaven came calling instead
I hope Aunt Margie and my mom will split a beer with you

My deepest condolences to the Wietlispach family.
I was fortunate to have Coach Wietlispach as one of my sophomore football coaches at Hoffman Estates HS. Coach Wietlispach was a gentle giant, but never the less a giant. I was awed by the way he spun a football, but as I grew, learned that was the least of his skills. To coach Wietlispach the needs of the student/athlete were placed well ahead and above his own. Coach was as consistent as the day is long, his energy and enthusiam was wrapped in a calm demeanor and infused with humor. I would later have the honor to call him a friend and colleague, coaching against him on the opposing sideline and alongside him as an educator in D211.

RIP Coach

I was deeply saddened to hear about the loss of one of my favorite teachers at HEHS when I attended there. I had Mr. Wietlispach during my senior year ('06). He made physics fun and easy to understand and was one of the two teachers at Hoffman who inspired me to go into teaching.

He was patient and was very kind.

My heart goes out to his family and friends

Hi I'm very saddened by the sudden loss of Mike. He was my football coach at Hoffman Estates HS back in the mid 80's and in the summers he hired me to paint houses with him and his friend, was it Lonnie? Not sure, but anyway I remember everyday we would listen to the oldies station and at that time I was only listening to classic rock, to this day I think of him as being the person that introduced me to the sweet songs of the 60's and 70's! He was kind and generous person.

I'm sorry for your loss, he will be missed.

God bless,
Paul Christie

We don't have the right words to express the sorrow we feel hearing of Mike passing away. He was a friend to both of us for twenty five years. He was a mentor, a teacher, and a father figure
Both Craig and I cherish the memories we have working with Mike in football and in Student Council at HEHS. I am so thankful to have traveled through Europe with him several times. I would follow Mike anywhere. He was the most kind, hardest working, and most caring man. He always talked about his wife and sons and the growing love he had for his grandchildren. We are all better having known Mike and he will be forever missed. Our most sincere condolences to the entire family. Sending our love, Jen and Craig Nieft

I graduated from Hoffman but did not have Mike as a teacher or a coach. I returned to Hoffman after college as a sub, which is when I had the opportunity to work with Mike. He was a huge support to me. He advocated for me and influenced my decision to stay in education. I am so saddened to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

The Wietlispach family lost it´s patriarch on New Year´s Day,2022. A patriarch can be the oldest or most venerable male member of a family. When an elder patriarch passes away he is always replaced. Micheal A. Wietlispach was the most venerable of all of us and can never be replaced.
