Stephen Norman Decker
Born: July 8, 1940 in Detroit, MI
Died: October 2, 2025 in McHenry, IL
Stephen Norman Decker, known affectionately to friends and family as Steve, passed away peacefully due to natural causes after a long struggle with dementia on October 2, 2025, in McHenry, Illinois. Born on July 8, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, Steve lived a full life, marked by his dedication to his family, his passion for the outdoors, and his commitment to service.
Steve graduated from Redford High School in Detroit. After serving in the Navy, Steve took an apprenticeship at National Cash Register, Inc. (NCR), where he would go on to have a long and successful career as a repair technician.
Steve was a man of many interests and talents. He had a knack for car repair, which he saw as both a hobby and a practical skill. His love for photography allowed him to capture the beauty of the world around him, and his photographs often reflected the joy and wonder he found in everyday moments. Boating was more than a pastime for Steve; it was a way to feel connected to nature and to the vastness of the water. Whether it was a calm lake or the open sea, Steve was happiest when he was on a boat.
His love for animals shone through in his affection for dogs. Steve could often be found shooting the breeze with his friends, a testament to his gentle and funny nature. Conversations with him were filled with laughter and thoughtful insights. Steve's years living in the Traverse City area were among his most cherished. He reveled in the beauty of northern Michigan, hiking through the woods and along the beaches, always with a sense of adventure and appreciation for the natural world.
One of Steve's most significant accomplishments was his more than 35 years of sobriety. It was a personal journey that he approached with the same thoughtfulness and determination that characterized all aspects of his life. His sobriety was a testament to his strength and an inspiration to those who knew him.
Steve is survived by his loving daughter, Judy Stettner, and predeceased by his son, Darryl Decker. He was a cherished brother to Jerome Decker and was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Margaret (Brueggemann) Decker. Steve's memory will be forever held in the hearts of his family, who admired his gentle spirit and his ability to find humor in the everyday. His family would especially thank all the staff at White Oaks Memory Care in McHenry, First Light Home Care, Judith Whitaker, and Journey Care for the loving care they gave Steve in his last years and moments.
Steve asked for no funeral or memorial service. So in keeping with his wishes, his family will gather next summer to spread his ashes in Michigan by those of his parent's and son. If you wish to honor his life in some way, may we suggest a donation to your local animal shelter or to environmental conservation.
