Ellen, you and I met only once that I recall; it was in your apartment near Broadway and the GE plant in Ft. Wayne. Frasheed (as I knew him) and I were roommates from November 1957 in Martha Hall at Indiana Tech. Although he was generally fluent in English, I remember working hard to teach him idiomatic, conversational English. In December, I took him to the Paramount Theater in Ft. Wayne to watch the Sinatra movie "The Joker is Wild," and he comprehended it well. As he grew confidant in his English, he stretched his horizon and took a personal interest in helping other Persian students cope in this strange world of America. I remember one of his charges was so enamored with Rice Krispies that he had penned a letter to Kellog company offering to be the company's representative in Iran. Frasheed disabused him of that notion, but we did get a good laugh at the young fellow's naivete. As you well know, later he left the dorm life and moved off campus, but we saw each other on campus and stayed close friends. Several years later as we neared graduation, he wanted to take an elective course in technical writing but didn't want to purchase the textbook. He asked to borrow mine and returned it at the completion of the class. Only problem was that he filled each page with his notes (in Farsi, no less). I no longer have the book, unfortunately. It was lost in one of my many moves.
He was my dear friend, and I cherish his memory. I'm sorry I'm only now learning of his death, but Iran is sort of in the news now, and it piqued my interest to see if I could find him via the internet. And I did. Farewell dear friend.
