Ann Devoy Obituary

Ann Devoy (nee Pasko) WHITING, IN - Ann Devoy (nee Pasko) 95 of Whiting, passed away on Friday, January 12, 2018 at the Munster Med- Inn. She was the beloved wife of the late William Edward Devoy who passed away May 17, 2007; cherished sister of Helen (late Richard) Samek and the late John (late Jane) Pasko and the late Mary (late Andrew) Beda; many dear nieces and nephews. Ann Devoy was born on October 29, 1922 in Whiting, Indiana to Stefan and Anna Pasko and was a lifelong resident. She grew up at Immaculate Conception Parish and was a graduate of Whiting High School, Class of 1940. Ann went on to attend the St. Margaret Hospital School of Nursing and became a registered nurse. During World War II she enlisted in the US Army, attaining the rank of Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps stationed at Fort Knox, KY as a surgical nurse. In 1949 she was hired as the City of Whiting's first public health nurse and served until her retirement in 1986. During her tenure she handled tests and immunizations for Whiting-Robertsdale schools as well as volunteering to care for students at Whiting's Catholic grade schools. She handled many public health issues, particularly taking the lead to care for the injured during the great Standard Oil fire of 1955. She unselfishly visited shut-ins, attending to their immediate health needs and taught many a new mother how to bathe their infants. On March 8, 2014, Ann received the Carl A. Binhammer Award for Community Service, the highest award for a citizen in the Whiting-Robertsdale Community (and probably the only recipient that actually knew Carl Binhammer!). Devoted to her community, Ann will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Private funeral services were held, there was no visitation. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Bill in Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting. Memorials to the Whiting Food Pantry, P.O. Box 591, Whiting, IN 46394, would be appreciated. www.baranfh.com (219)659-4400

Ann and I in 2016

March 12, 2018

Ann's niece, Judy Beda, was my next door neighbor. When Ann visited, she used to converse with me and Bill over the fence for hours. We loved her 'tounge lashings', and her sense of humor, coupled with her knowledge of Robertsdale. I was first introduced to the neighborhood after moving there in March of 2007 by Ann. Ann made me feel right at home. Aside from caring for Judy (when Judy became ill), she was always making something for someone! She knitted me a beanie hat and made my Bill a "back buddy", and even invited us into her home on Fred Street to see her vast book collection. When my daughter, Brittney, got married, she sent her a beautiful lace garment and a story to go with it, which my daughter keeps in a special place. Ann brightened up any room she entered and her quick wit and matter-of-fact personality let you know exactly where you stood. My kind of lady! We talked often on the phone and Bill and I would send her a Christmas card, and she would send us her infamous Christmas story and blessing, which was always very spiritual and special to us. We'll miss Ann, but knowing how much she loved her life, and living it with grace and so courageously - she loved everyone! I know God said, as she passed from this world..."Well Done, My Good and Faithful Servant, Well Done". Rest in peace, dear Ann. We will all miss you greatly and hold tight the memories you forever etched into the minds of many people who had the good fortune of meeting you.
