ANTHONY JOSEPH KOZROWSKI "TONY"
Anthony Joseph Kozrowski "Tony", age 101, of Gary and Portage, IN, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2016 at Franciscan Health in Munster, IN. Centurion, patriarch, grandfather, father, steelworker, Sherriff's deputy, Bailiff and Constable of Lake County, IN. Tony was born in Chicago and spent nearly 80 years of his life on the job. He joined the Carnegie, IL Steel Corporation or US Steel as it is now known, in 1933 and served there for 40 years before retiring in 1973. During WW II, he served as civilian defense contractor while at US Steel. In 1971, two years prior to his first retirement, he was elected as the last Constable of Lake County, IN and served as such until the office was dissolved. On January 1, 1975, five years after he also began as an officer of the court, the Honorable Judge Nicholas Schiralli hired him to be his bailiff. The two worked together for the next 30 years until a second and final retirement came in 2006, at age 92. All the way up until his last day as a Sheriff's deputy and bailiff, Tony served summons and patrolled the streets of Lake County with the same respect for the job as he did on his first day. He was married to Rose Kozrowski (Lascaro) for 64 years from 1939 un her death in 2004. Tony is survived by his son, Thomas (Shirley) Kozrowski of Valparaiso; daughter, Chalene (George) Melnik of Connecticut; grandsons: Thomas Kozrowski of Bloomington, Dr. George Melnik of Chicago; granddaughter, Michelle Kostelnik of Huntinton Beach, CA; two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Rose; daughter,Bonnie; son-in- law, Gary Kostelnik. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service at 6:00 p.m. www.burnsfuneral.com
