Ara Dumanian Obituary

DR. ARA VAHAN DUMANIAN FORMERLY OF NORTHWEST INDIANA
Prominent surgeon Dr. Ara Vahan Dumanian, a pioneer in heart surgery, died at the age of 81 at his home in Palo Alto, CA on August 5, 2010. He is survived by Edma, his wife of 52 years. He is also survived by his three children and their spouses: his daughter Tania Tour-Sarkissian and her husband Paul, of San Francisco; his son Dr. Gregory Dumanian and his wife Randa, of Chicago, and his son Peter Dumanian and his wife Elizabeth, of Los Altos, CA. He leaves seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Dr. Krikor Doumanian and his wife Mette, of Los Angeles; and numerous nieces and nephews. The son of Armenian Genocide survivors, Dr. Dumanian was born in 1929 in Alexandretta (Iskanderoun), Syria. He lived there until age 9, when his family moved to Aleppo, Syria. In 1949 he entered the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. Graduating in 1953 with his medical degree, Dr. Dumanian emigrated to the U.S. and began his internship and residency as a surgeon in Chicago. From 1956 through 1962, Dr. Dumanian trained as a general surgeon and then as a heart surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Blessed with boundless energy, Dr. Dumanian simultaneously obtained his Masters (1960) and his Ph.D. (1961) in Surgery from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Dumanian entered private practice in 1962 in northwest Indiana, where he was the first heart surgeon in the area. For the next 26 years, his patients benefited from his dedication and his mastery of the latest advances in heart surgery. Dr. Dumanian performed over 17,000 surgeries, of which 3,500 were open heart surgeries, saving lives that previously would have been lost and improving the lives of countless patients and their families. Even after he retired in 1988 to enjoy life in Chicago and extensive travel with his wife, Dr. Dumanian's advice was continually sought by people familiar with his medical prowess. He always responded with the acumen and compassion that characterized his entire medical career. Dr. Dumanian was equally generous in his philanthropic endeavors. He established the Ara and Edma Dumanian Foundation in 1987 and contributed to causes ranging from the Lyric Opera of Chicago to battered women's shelters. Dr. Dumanian was honored as a Prince of Cilicia by the Armenian Apostolic Church for his efforts on the church's behalf both in the U.S. and in Lebanon. Dr. and Mrs. Dumanian teamed with the United Armenian Cultural Association in 1977 to provide the initial seed money for the Armenian Studies program at the University of Chicago. Over the next three decades, Dr. and Mrs. Dumanian continued to fund the program, now known as the Dumanian Armenian Studies Endowment, ensuring for the future that Armenian history and language courses would be offered at the University of Chicago. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to the Dumanian Armenian Studies Endowment at the University of Chicago, c/o Associate Dean Katie Malmquist, University of Chicago, Walker Museum 213, 1115 East 58th Street, Chicago, IL 60637.

Ara was the most dedicated, resposible and compasionate doctor I have seen. Dr. Dumanian was a man so resposible in his work that the day he operated he will remain in the hospital thru the night to be close to the patient. Constantly checking the ptient ad ordering medications if needed. His presence was respected among all his colleages who knew his expertise and tenacity. He was unique and saved thousands of lives during his practicing years. He will be remember from everybody who treated and all families who he help. Dr. Dumanian was on in a million, difficult to replicate.

For Dr. Ara Dumanian his wife Edma and Family

"Dedication...Dedication ",
This was Ara's theory

He was born for
And he did with all his soul.

His patients all and always
All lived in his core.

And every chest He opened and closed
He wanted thy to return home with a happy smile.

And he did for 3,500 hearts and for their families
Till he could not do more.

He had a real Armenian Heart
No one could deny

Our heart goes with his wife Edma
Who waited for him to come home
And relax after every uneasy day
And this continued for years...

This was his life and his dears life
Everyone who knew them
Will remember them.

Will remember Ara's dedication and contribution to Cardiac Surgery
In those difficult days.

Every life has an end
But humans,, contibution and dedecation remain endless.

A witness to a Hero

Dr Dumanian not only took care of his own patients, but saved the life of another surgeon's patient. I was on a local hospital's post op floor, when a patient blew a graft. The nurses were working to save the patient's life when Dr Dumanian arrived on the floor. He quickly gave the order for uncross matched blood, the patient was in great need of blood, any kind of blood. Dr Dumanian did not hestiate for a second to take the patient to surgery. That patient lived, due to a man who was willing to do what was right & necessary for a person who was not his patient without a moment of hestiation.

Dearest Edma and the Dumanian Family:

We want to express our sincerest condolences for the loss of Ara. Although we have only known Ara and you for about ten years, Al and I feel like it's been a life time. Ara was the most wonderful person we have had the privelege of knowing and we will miss him so very much. Even in his retirement, he was always available to help and care for anyone who needed his help...and me, in particular! He has left all of us with very fond memories. I know that Ara is in a very special place in God's kingdom.... And Edma, 'bridge' will not be quite the same without him.

Affectionately,
Sylvia and Al

Dear Dumanian Family & Friends:

Although we do not know one another, I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere condolences for the loss of Dr. Dumanian. I, as an Armenian, have always been interested in members of our community throughout the world. I appreciate and admire everyone for their talents and contributions to their family, friends and society. May you all find comfort in knowing that, your husband, father, family member, doctor, colleague, friend and fellow Armenian, Dr. Dumanian was and will certainly be given a special place in God's kingdom.

I worked with Dr. Dumanian during the 1970 and 1980 decades and it is very difficult to find a doctor as dedicated as Dr. Dumanian. I know hundreds of people surviving because of his dexterity and knowlege, RIP. Carlos and Donna Serna.

Dear Dumanian Family,

Your father performed a corrective surgery for coarctation of the aorta when I was 17 years old and had just graduated from high school. He chose to use an incision that resulted in the least amount of visible scarring, so important to a teen-age girl. In explaining this to my parents (and me!), he helped ease my fear of being physically unattractive afterwards. In addition, his compassionate bedside manner eased the trauma of spending the summer after high school graduation hospitalized, then recuperating at home while my friends left for college. I will forever be grateful to him for his professionalism and personal warmth.

To the Dumanian Family,
Dr. Dumanian preformed open heart surgery on me in 1965, at the age of 20. I was petrified. His patience, kindness & gentle ways helped me through this difficult time. He repaired a whole in my heart & mitral valve with scar tissue. That was 45 years ago & the repair is still intact. I'm grateful he gave me my life as I know it today. Dr. Dumanian was a phenomenal surgeon.
I'm deeply sorry for your loss. May the memories you have help you through this difficult time.

Thanks to you, I'm alive today. After dying on the operating table 3 times, you brought me back to life each time. Although I made the front page of The Times in 1964, they should have had your picture and story on the front page,I did nothing and you saved thousands of lives throughout your life. My prayers are with you.

Even with all of Dr. Dumanians' accomplishments and prowess in the surgical arena, we must not forget how he recognized and encouraged the abilities of others. Dr. Dumanian empowered each of us to strive for nothing less than excellence. As the forerunner in cardio-vascular surgery in NW Indiana, I was honored to be a part of his surgical team in the early years. I vividly remember countless hours spent at patient bedsides, collaborating with the cath lab team, midnight visits to the hospital checking on then progress of his patients... time nor space allows me to expound as I could ...and then there was his beloved wife Edma...sharing her husband, taking over the duties of the household, the children and always being there when Dr. arrived home. Yes, I am deeply saddened to hear of this great loss but, I am also appreciative of the time I was able to be in his very presence. Dr., I thank you for allowing me to be a part of your great team.

To the Dumanian Family:

My father underwent one of the early open heart surgeries performed by Dr. Dumanian and his affiliates at St. Catherines Hospital in East Chicago, In. back in 1971. They were the only team of surgeons performing such delicate surgeries in the entire area at that time. That early surgery allowed my father to see his grandsons grow to their teens and for our family to have an additional fifteen years of memories that we wouldn't have had without his skill and expertise.

I am so sorry for your loss and your family will be in my prayers.

Dr. Dumanian preformed heart surgery on me in 1984 when I was 19 years old. He was a very kind and compassionate man. I was very concerned about the scar that I would have from and the surgery Dr. Dumanian took extra time and special stitches to make sure my scar looked nice. I would not have the life I have today without his skills as a surgeon and he made a difficult time for a young woman a little easier. My prayers and condolences go out to his family.

To the Dumanian Family,
My family and I were so greatful for all the love and compassion given to us by Dr. Dumanian and the group of surgeons he operated with at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, IN back in 1971 when my Dad had his first open heart surgery. We were lucky enough to have Dad for a total of twent-eight years after his first open heart.
We often speak of Dr. Dumanian and the group of surgeons like they were part of our family. We will always be greatful to have met him and greatful for the concern and loving way we were treated.
We will be praying for your family.
