Arthur "Leon" Shewmaker, 91 of Lake Station, Indiana, went to be with the Lord on March 1, 2025. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 7, 1933, in Marion, Kentucky, to Arthur M. and Geneva (Gipson) Shewmaker.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur M. Shewmaker and Geneva (Gipson) Shewmaker; wife, Sheila K. (Erwin) Shewmaker; son, Danny L. Shewmaker; daughter, Karen K. Shewmaker; and nine brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his son, Gary (Carol) Shewmaker of Valparaiso, Indiana; daughter, Sharon (Demetress) Shewmaker of DeMotte, Indiana; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren whom he cherished deeply.
Leon married Sheila Erwin, the love of his life, in 1953. The two were inseparable until her death in 2014. He hired in at US Steel in 1956 where he worked for over 45 years. Leon was a member of USWA Local 1066. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of New Chicago.
Leon was a hardworking and fun-loving man who by sheer determination, hard work and grit forged his own path in life. His dedication to his family was unshakable. Although his family is heartbroken by the loss of their father and patriarch of their family, they are comforted in knowing he lived a long, full, life and is now reunited with their mother, the love of his life.
Visitation for Leon will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Avenue, Portage.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. the following day, Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at the funeral home with Pastor Jerry Stepp officiating. Burial will follow in Heritage Cemetery, Portage. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.ee-fh.com.
