Benjamin Wilcher Obituary

Benjamin Wilcher Jr. Gary Police Officer Benjamin Wilcher, Jr., was born April 23, 1979 to Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin, Sr. and Gloria Wilcher in Gary, IN. Loving known as "BJ", Ben attended the Gary Community Schools where he earned his high school diploma from Lew Wallace in 1997. He later took classes at Purdue University Calumet. A member of St. Timothy Community Church, Ben recently became active with the missionary group and provided valuable assistance to the "Back to School Supply" give away initiative. An avid sportsman, Ben played basketball, tennis and football in high school. He continued his love for the games as an adult by participating in various golf outings, on a community amateur baseball team and the Gary Police Department Basketball team. Ben married his high school sweetheart, Amre (Glover) on June 26, 2004. Their union was blessed with two beautiful children, Benjamin, III, two years old and Ronald Amrei, two months. Ben often beamed with pride as he spoke of and anticipated the future of his sons in sports. Having a strong work ethic instilled in him his parents, Ben entered the workforce at the age of 16. His work history includes successful employment with Papa Johns Pizza, Shakey's Restaurant, Target, Famous Footwear, St. Margaret Hospital, Harrah's Casino and the Gary Community School Corporation, where he worked as security at his alma mater. It was not uncommon for Ben to work two jobs as he focused in on working hard to obtain the American dream of homeownership. His work experiences prepared him for what he called his life's work as a law enforcement officer. While working at Harrah's, Ben set his goal to become a police officer within two years. Determined to accomplish this mission with great character and integrity, he entered the Police Academy in Plainfield, IN after achieving the second highest score in his applicant group. He completed his training in March 2005 and was sworn in as a Gary Police Officer in August of 2006. He remained dedicated and committed to his duties as an officer until his untimely transition on Sunday, August 12, 2007. His legacy of love, dedication and commitment to family will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of his devoted wife, Amre; children: Benjie and Ronald; parents Benjamin and Gloria of Gary; sister Nicole and brother Allen of Gary; mother-in-law Irma Jean Glover; sister-in-laws Nikki Glover of Gary and Lori Williams of Crown Point, IN; special aunt Floria Williams of Gary and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ben is preceded in death by paternal grandparents Allen and Anna Wilcher and maternal grandmother Louise Bonds. Ben will be lovingly missed as we hold his memories close to our hearts. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 17, 2007 from 1-8pm at Ridgelawn Funeral Home, 4201 West Ridge Road, Gary, IN 46408. Funeral services will take place at the Gary Genesis Center Plaza, Gary, IN. on Saturday, August 18, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be sent or delivered to any Harris Bank to Benjamin Wilcher Fund.

I am sorry for your loss. I met BJ through my brother Daniel Franklin. When BJ came to the house he always had a smile on his face and he was the type of person that if you needed help, he would help you. BJ will be miss by all. There are no words to say that will comfort you Amre, but remeber this, BJ is there with you through the boys and he is in your heart. As time goes by it will get better.

Uncle Benji,Auntie Glo, Nicole, Allen, Amre and the boys,I know that it has been a long time since we have seen or talked to each other. But my prayers and thoughts are with you all. The thousands of miles between us cannot equal the amount of love I have for you all. I can only tell you that no farewell words were spoken, no time to say goodbye, he was gone before you knew it and only GOD knew why. If Love could have saved him, He would have lived forever. Keep his memory alive, and never let those boys forget him even in their young lives.

To the Wilcher Family and Friends:

I never had the pleasure of meeting Officer Wilcher, but it seems that he was well loved and respected. To the family, hold on to your memories, for right now they may hurt, but later you will see that will make you smile. To family friends, don't forget that when everything for you returns to normal, this family will still need you. Healing is a process, and it doesnt happen overnight.

Allow friends and family to comfort you at this time. The days ahead will be difficult so know that God is here to comfort, protect, and keep you when friends and family are gone. I can't say I know what you're going through,
And I won't even try .
But I will say that God is there with you;
And on His shoulder you can always cry.
For He's the only that knows and feels your pain,
And His love is always near.
So cast your cares upon Him -receive His comfort;
And let Him wipe away all your tears.
Trust and believe that all He does has a reason,
Rejoice in knowing that Benjamin is in His care.
All His earthly work is done-his job's completed;
And now He's at rest with Jesus Christ in the air.
Be Blessed & Encouraged-God Loves You and so do I.

a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.

To Glo, Benji, Nicole, Allen, Flo, Wayne, and Roy:
Its been quite some time since I've seen all of you. I just saw Benji, Glo and Amre at the Star in November but its been even longer since I saw BJ! But as always, BJ would greet me with a great smile, a hug and a "Hey Auntie Yo". From the time I read the shocking news of BJ's accident and death, I keep recalling one of the last times I saw him at the OMNI Fitness center. We talked for such a long time that night and we even took some pictures together! When you think of BJ and the type of man he was, you can't help but know that each time you were with him, it was a good time!
Growing up as an only child I would often complain that I'd never be an aunt! It was my grandmother who told me that I might marry a man that had sisters and brothers so there may be hope for me becoming someone's aunt or sister. So, even in times like these, I'm grateful to God for marrying Alex (Wayne) because it gave me the chance to have a family like yours and nephews and nieces. I thank God for all of you and I thank God for my nephew BJ! He was truly a blessing to all of us! I will always love you! Stay prayerful and mindful! Always in my thoughts and forever in my prayers! I love you Alouiscious (Alex DeWayne):)

To the Wilcher Family:

No words cannot describe the hurt that was initially felt when I first learned of BJ’s death. I have known BJ since I was about 13 years old. I remember hanging out with him and his cousins. We had so much fun. And although I did not see or talk to him much during our adult lives, when I did see him, it was as if we talked yesterday. The last time I saw him, he just recently joined the police force. He also recently had his second son, which he showed me pictures on his cell phone. He was a proud father and excited about being with the Gary police department. Every time I heard about BJ, it was always good things. I just saw Nicole on Friday at the barbershop, right before the accident. I remember saying to her to send BJ a hello from me when she saw him. I hope that it made it to him…. Although his life ended so suddenly, of course his spirit lives on with his family and everyone who knew and loved him. It’s an honor to be one of those people and a blessing to have shared apart of my life with him. I will always cherish the memories…. To his wife & family: I pray to God to give you strength and peace in this time that’s needed.

From,
(daughter of Cantrell Williams, Sr.)

First I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the Wilcher family on the loss of your loved one. I've met BJ on several occasions through the Franklin family with the most recent being a part of the Franklin wedding party this past June. I remember him speaking highly of his job and when asked what was his job, he proudly said Gary Police Officer. BJ seemed to be one of the good ones that served his purpose here on earth but was taken too soon. I know his passing was untimely but GOD had a plan for BJ. He will continue to live on in the hearts of those who've known him as well as those who've had the pleasure of meeting him. I will keep you all in my prayers.

August 16, 2007

To the Wilcher Family,
I was so shocked to hear of Officer Wilcher's passing because I just saw him at work (security officer at Lew Wallace High School) the Thursday before.

I know my words are not adequate enough, but please know that Ben Wilcher was a professional officer and a gentleman. He was well-respected by his peers and loved by the students. He always had a listening ear for students.

I looked at Officer Wilcher as a "Gentle Giant". We are truly missing him at Lew Wallace High School. As you entered the school this summer, he was always sitting there greeting me as I came through those doors.

Just now know that Ben Wilcher sits at the right hand of the throne of Grace, and he is our heavenly angel watching over us all.

May God's Divine and Saving Grace reign over you during these trying times.

My prayers to you and your family.

To the Wilcher family,
I am sorry for your lost and the depature of a real strong black man. I grew up watching B.J. turn from a quiet young boy into a prodominant young man. Always remember that he is gone only in body but his spirit will remain on this earth in his children. He is gone and will never be forgotten. Glo, he is your guardian angel now! Nicole keep your head up baby girl your brother needs you now more than ever! Much love, Ms. Quiana Felders(Ki-Wi),Anfernee(Twill),DaeShaun(ShaBang),Kameron(Dooda).

May God provide peace that surpasses all understanding to Ben's family and all the lives that he touched with his loving heart. John 14:27 I graduated with Ben from Lew Wallace as well and also attended school with Ben throughout grade school. I will continue to pray God's comfort and blessings. I am sure he is in a better place. Be encouraged. God bless and keep you.
