BERNICE SCHULTZ Obituary

Bernice S. Schultz (nee Magdziak) WHITING/COLORADO - Bernice Schultz, a 1925 Classic, was called from earth by our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, following a 2-month battle with heart and kidney failure. Bernice was born to Polish immigrants, Stanley and Mary Magdziak, in Illinois. She attended St. Andrew the Apostle Elementary School. She graduated in the midst of WWII in 1943 from Thornton Fractional North High School. Being born the 7th of 13 children provided her the opportunity of assisting her mother with childcare, cooking and baking. When she was 20, she traveled to San Antonio, Texas on a whim. This led to a 6-month adventure at Randolph AFB, where she landed a job processing the soldiers out, following the war. Bernice married Edward Schultz in 1948 and together they built a life in Ed's childhood home in Whiting, Indiana. Both Bernice and Ed were extremely community-minded and devoted a great deal of their lives in and around St. Adalbert Church and School. In addition to being a top-notch homemaker, Bernice was very active in St. Adalbert's Choir, Altar & Rosary Society, Daughters of Isabella, St. Hedwig's Lodge, American Legion Post 369, Whiting/Robertsdale Community Choir, the Alleluia Choir, Whiting/Robertsdale Seniors, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (SEAS) "Forever Young" Seniors and SEAS Prayer Shawl Ministry. At the age of 84, she moved to Fort Collins, CO, where she has lived with her daughter and son-in-law for the past 9 years. Bernice is survived by her two children and their spouses, Bill and Terrie Schultz of Munster and Nancy and Jim Zawada of Fort Collins, CO. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Kristen (Zac) Zawada Brownson and Jimmy Zawada. Her younger sister, Patricia Kasper, is her only remaining living sibling. Bernice also has numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, her parents, seven brothers, five sisters and their spouses. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 10:00a.m. at St. Adalbert Church, 1341-121st Street, Whiting, IN with the Rev. Stanley J. Dominik, officiating. Interment will follow the Mass at Holy Cross Cemetery, Calumet City, IL. Friends are invited to meet with the family at the church on Wednesday from 9:00a.m. to time of services. Local arrangements have been entrusted to the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting. As a tribute to Bernice's flair for fashion, please feel free to dress in bright, joyful colors as we celebrate her life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to "Pathways Hospice" in care of Baran's Funeral Home, 1235-119th St, Whiting, IN 46394. Heartfelt thanks are extended to the Associates in Family Medicine team, Poudre Valley Hospital Cardiac Unit, Lemay Avenue Health & Rehab, Brookdale Assisted Living, Pathways Hospice, and the team of physicians, nurses and therapists who cared so tenderly for Mom. God Bless You All! www.baranfh.com (219) 659-4400

A sincere thank you to Nancy and Jim Zawada who opened up their home and took care of my Mother for 9 years until her stay at Brookdale. One could not ask any more.

A big thank you to all the church parishioners who opened up their hearts and provided friendship and fellowship to my mother in her new home in Fort Collins over the past 9 years. Virginia brought by a rosary during my visit a few weeks ago, allowing us to pray the rosary twice a day during my stay, just an example of the kindness shown to my Mother.

My condolences go out to the family of my Uncles Alex, Chester, Julius and Frank and Aunts Frances, Stella, Mary, Helen and Patricia, all who gave us a great childhood with all the birthdays, first communions, graduations, weddings and other special days. Other than the last survivor Patricia, you are all back together. Nastrovia to all!
