Betty "Boop" VanHorssen

In loving memory of Betty "Boop" VanHorssen. A devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Boop, 86, passed away peacefully in her home Monday, August 11th surrounded by her children.

Betty is survived by her son, Gregory (Tammy) VanHorssen; daughter, Laura (Kevin) Rivich; daughter, Debra (Steve) DeSantiago; her eight loving grandchildren, Dustin, Corey, Steven, Christopher, Ashley, Sean, Elizabeth and Nicholas; and her nine loving great-grandchildren. She is now peacefully reunited with daughter, Cynthia Hunter and partner, Mike Rivich.

Betty has left a legacy. To know her was to love her. She retired from Jewel Osco where she worked as a cashier for 38 years. She was a Cubs fanatic, a margarita drinker and the life of the party. She loved her cat; Baby, her coffee and butter toast, and doing some gypsy mojo for anyone who negatively crossed her family's path. She had a love for jewelry, feeding the birds in her backyard, and listening to Bob Seger.

Her heart was big. She was fun, spunky, and full of life. Her foul mouth is what got her in… and out... of trouble. She'd drop anything to be around her grandchildren or great-grandchildren. She loved to celebrate anything and everything. She was stubborn, but she was always herself. She will be remembered for her fiery spirit and her untamed personality.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Betty to Humane Indiana.

A visitation for Betty will be held Friday, September 5, 2025, from 2 to 5 p.m., at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307. Family and friends whose lives Betty touched are invited to Bridges Scoreboard (Griffith) following the visitation beginning at 5:30 p.m. to celebrate the wonderful life Betty had lived.
