Connie Manous Obituary

Connie Brakulis Manous

Apr 14, 1938 - Sep 16, 2024

Connie Brakulis Manous, 86, passed away September 16, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Olympia Brakulis; her beloved husband, James Manous; and sister-in-law, Grace Manous. Connie is survived by her sister, Stacia (John) Rosales; son, Peter (Susan) Manous; daughter, Georgia (Cary) Gessler; grandchildren, Casey Gessler, Matthew Manous, Jamie Gessler, and Andrew Manous; in-laws, Gust and Helen Manous; in addition to her nieces, nephews and many friends and colleagues.

Connie was a 1957 graduate of Horace Mann High School in Gary, IN, and a graduate of Indiana University School of Education. She went on to receive her Masters Degree and Administrative license in Education from Purdue University with a concentration in Special Education. Following the completion of her higher education, she was on the faculty of Purdue University and where she taught many future educators and school administrators.

Connie was well known in the field of Special Education. Her passion for helping to educate and assist children with special needs was widely known throughout Northwest Indiana and the State of Indiana. She served as a teacher in the East Chicago Public Schools and later became Director of Special Education for over 15 years. Along with other dedicated teachers and administrators, she helped created landmark programs for children with special needs including the Tri-City Special Olympics. Upon her retirement from the School City of East Chicago, she was asked to consult for the School City of Hammond's Special Education Department. That consulting led to her leading the School City of Hammond Special Education Department as Executive Director for over 13 years.

Connie mentored scores of special education teachers and assisted them in becoming administrators. Those colleagues are now serving the public good throughout Northwest Indiana. Most importantly, she was beloved by her family and friends and will be truly missed.

Visitation with the family will be Friday September 20, 2024 from 4-8pm at Burns-Kish Funeral Home, 8415 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Sending my deepest condolence to Georgia and Peter. It was just 2 months ago that me, my sister and Georgia was just speaking of the good times. Connie was my teacher at Franklin Elementary and everytime I got a chance to run into her, it was with open arms and well wishes. She left a great legacy to be emulated. She has gone to a home more beautiful than any we've ever known. God bless the entire family. You shall remain in my prayers

I have such fond memories of Mom, Peter and Georgia. As a Speech Pathologist with Mom as my boss, I remember her dedication to the students as she supported the staff unequivocally. I can hear her laugh and see her smile as we had so many conversations over the years. Her memories will be a blessing for you. Carol Smulevitz Friedman.
